[Rose] curious if there's a reason behind using html[lang="de"] vs html:lang(de)

in combination with JavaScript to make things move, hide or show elements etc. I like how the JS only works as triggering machine will the CSS does the heavy lifting this way

sorry for the odd grammar and several messages my keyboard have some water condensed because I left my phone outside during the night

[Rose] your code looks like it's targeting the whole page rather than the first column. did you mean to target `td` and `th`?

[tantek] Not really I guess. In this case, it will be exact variants only. But when doing layout designs, it is quite possible you may need different adjustments for different variant languages. I guess the reason I chose it is control? I don't like unpredictable behaviour!
#
[rose]
[mikemai2awesom] It's like I said above - I set the variables for certain things at the root level so they are easy to find in one place and adjust with the client on the fly. They are used at the element level, but set as variables at the root level.
#
[mikemai2awesom]
oh i got it. that variable is only used in the first column
#
[mikemai2awesom]
the generic name threw me off. 😄
#
[mikemai2awesom]
very. nice
#
[rose]
Threw you off? Oh, you mean cos label-col at root level. Yeah, it's the label column width to be exact. But the variable is only ever used once. It's all just to make it easier to maintain. So anything that adjusts between languages can be adjusted with a single html language override on all the variables that have to change rather than a load of different elements. It makes it easier to maintain across languages.
#
[rose]
To be completely honest, I hadn't actually realised that was an unusual thing to do until you stumbled over it!

one thing to consider for accessibility, try to avoid px values to accommodate text zoom. use relative values like ch, em, rem, etc. so your long german text doesn't get squished if user text zooms.
#
[mikemai2awesom]
i dealt with a lot of german pages at my last job to learn it the hard way
#
[rose]
ah, that's not a bad idea for the columns actually... good point, thanks. It may also reduce the amount of testing and adjusting that's been necessary. (hyphens-auto is on, mind - and I've inserted soft hyphens everywhere)
#
[rose]
I'm also fluent in German and a translator, so asked among translators but got no responses, weirdly. I'm not sure how often localisers will actually include soft hyphens in their work when instructed to. Sometimes it is necessary with long technical terms.

[rose]
[mikemai2awesom] ++ for the ch tip in tables (I don't design many - I use ch most of the time but somehow forgot here!)

i tried teaching authors soft hyphens, it was not easy

[Rose] there are many cases where :lang is more robust for language selection than attribute selectors. E.g. hyphenated language codes with sub languages, where you want to match the main language regardless of sublang
#
[rose]
[tantek] Right, but I don't actually WANT that behaviour - because the content will be different, so it is quite likely that the styling (it's table-heavy) will need to be different.
#
[rose]
I get that it may be useful in other scenarios - but in this one, not really. I don't want someone changing things then claiming it was me who made it not work, basically. 😄

chr0m4: yeah, data attributes are really cool for that in JS!
