sorry to leave you hangin.. as i've mentioned i'm using Tor and GPG. i'm also aggressively using Git and Python's Pip to push updates continuously. two of my supported post types are code and [wiki] page. the idea is to be able to decentralize code and wiki contribution, clearly. Tor onions are now my official identifier namespace. GPG is proving to be everything I need it to be so WoT will be in use
#
AngeloGladding
out the gates. What happens if I fork /Webmention to https://lahacker.net/pages/Webmention and modify if to fit Canopy needs? lol
#
AngeloGladding
i know you guys don't like to deal in hypotheticals
#
AngeloGladding
i'm getting ready to launch the services behind the canopy which include a host and a directory. the host will provide one-click installs at a hair above cost ($5 digital ocean droplet). i seeded the directory with indiemap and set my crawler to crawl. it found on the order of 100 people, some of which were no longer active.
#
AngeloGladding
obviously we'll see what happens but i'd hate for the chat/wiki to become inundated with trolls and noobs that make your chat with [jon] seem tame.
#
AngeloGladding
cnpy.gdn will be the host
#
AngeloGladding
subdomains will be doled out so the barrier to entry to the wiki will be floored
#
AngeloGladding
so i guess the question is -- where and how do I link back to the IndieWeb if at all?
#
AngeloGladding
i'm bootstrapping out of https://understory.live and i actually had language along the lines of "see #indieweb-dev" up at one point
#
AngeloGladding
i don't want to take credit for anything IndieWeb. i don't want to confuse people by even mentioning it if they don't need to know about it.
#
AngeloGladding
if i point to you guys, people will arrive here. if i point to my own space, people will arrive there. which is best?
#
AngeloGladding
the DO sales rep told me to "bring it" when i asked if they were prepared
#
AngeloGladding
the Mastodon problem you guys have been mentally preparing for isn't even really plausible as there's no mechanism for users to onboard en masse
#
AngeloGladding
i'm preparing to onboard IndieWeb users en masse.
#
AngeloGladding
ah on last thought i swear!
#
AngeloGladding
because i haven't been selfdogfooding my implementation, it's *probably* *not* interoperable with all of your implementations, but it *is* with itself.
#
AngeloGladding
i'll wait to launch until it interoperates of course but once the gears start grinding i could be tempted to say "works for me"
#
AngeloGladding
and by me i mean the canopy
#
AngeloGladding
aaronpk, Zegnat, et al whichever path you desire me to take i will but do let me know so that i can prepare accordingly -- THANK YOU!
#
AngeloGladding
just oooooone last thing.. cnpy.live will be the directory and my experience crawling all your sites thus far tells me that the variety and diversity of implementations is ... rich
#
AngeloGladding
so i'm already itching to go full throttle /monoculture
#
AngeloGladding
but i am very aware of the pitfalls

for what it's worth i've come up with my own means to combat the authoritarian nature of BDFL -- the source code is currently hosted at https://understory.live -- the source will be hosted at https://lahacker.net post bootstrap -- alice clones from https://lahacker.net/canopy.git -- bob clones from https://alice.example.org/canopy.git
#
AngeloGladding
i'm manufacturing my test suite to be able to handle conflicts that may arise
#
AngeloGladding
all kinds of interesting fork topologies can arise
#
AngeloGladding
for better and for worse

[angelogladding] excited to see what you are building but push back against their is no en masse way to “sign up” for the indieweb….you don’t sign up..you just get a domian and website of your own…almost limitless ways to sign up
[jgmac1106], benwerd and [eddie] joined the channel
#
[eddie]
Plus Micro.blog is a pretty close method of masses being able to sign up for IndieWeb technologies easily.

jgmac1106 so my test has been my soccer network (~50) -- exclusively non-tech people -- an important social circle for me to have fluid communication
#
AngeloGladding
they are certainly smartphone adept and some use social media but absolutely none could set up their own site

#
AngeloGladding
so it came down to POSSE over SMS/email
#
AngeloGladding
so this domain barrier exists
#
AngeloGladding
it has desirable properties
#
AngeloGladding
but it's definitely too hard for the masses.
#
AngeloGladding
[eddie] micro.blog is a great first service for the IndieWeb and we can all learn from it
#
AngeloGladding
but it has obvious problems
#
AngeloGladding
if you don't already have a blog it creates a centralized one for you
#
AngeloGladding
which for all intents and purposes makes it a silo
#
AngeloGladding
and there's no real way for a novice user to understand the consequences
jackjami_ left the channel
#
AngeloGladding
to call it a method to onboard en masse seems disingenuous
#
AngeloGladding
when you compare a micro blog to your own site, for example
#
AngeloGladding
it's like the web developer is king in this social web
#
AngeloGladding
my solution to the recentralization effect is as follows:
#
AngeloGladding
alice registers alice.cnpy.gdn and i spawn an instance of the canopy software under my control, on her behalf
#
AngeloGladding
if she ever wants to self-host she can install her own instance of the canopy somewhere, pull the data over using git, and have me point the subdomain to her new IP address
#
AngeloGladding
so it's been vaporware for me so far with the canopy but the delay has been due to me proactively addressing these inevitable growth pains
[cleverdevil] joined the channel
#
AngeloGladding
oh FYI i've added cnpy.gdn to the public suffix list as a Pseudo-TLD so alice.cnpy.gdn and bob.cnpy.gdn are both full-fledged domains
#
AngeloGladding
oof i just implemented TOTP 2FA for sign in and i'm getting that feeling i've gotten before -- should i add it to the wiki?
#
AngeloGladding
what will most likely happen is the documentation is rendered in a Canopy context

@angelogladding yes posse to sms is something I want as well for all my coaching, game reminders etc. Notifications from PWA may work but this sounds more - dev

[jgmac1106]
-meta is for organizing and planning online spaces and real life events
#
AngeloGladding
urban dictionary: "1. Meta means about the thing itself. It's seeing the thing from a higher perspective instead of from within the thing, like being self-aware."
#
AngeloGladding
the chat banner reads "Talk about IndieWeb community itself, wiki etc."
#
AngeloGladding
[jgmac1106] the Canopy wrapping/forking the IndieWeb is pretty meta
#
AngeloGladding
at least in the traditional sense
#
AngeloGladding
anyway, this discussion has bounced around in all rooms but -chat
#
AngeloGladding
hardly a discussion -- smacks of "ignore the troll and he'll go away" -- but alas it could be too much to handle at the moment and too abstract to address
#
[eddie]
I know a lot of people are offline right now because of a IRL conference that they are attending
#
[eddie]
so things are probably a bit more ghost town than normal for several days
#
AngeloGladding
ah it sounded like more than just a HWC
#
[eddie]
Yeah, it’s a several day conference called XOXO
#
[eddie]
so a bunch of the core leadership people are at that, so they might not be on here as much as normal
#
AngeloGladding
ah well thanks for letting me know [eddie]
#
[eddie]
 My pleasure.
#
[kevinmarks]
Is cnpy.gdn an actual domain?
#
[kevinmarks]
Neither it nor cnpy.live resolve for me
#
[eddie]
I think that’s Tor stuff
#
[kevinmarks]
That's a different barrier to entry

what is a block list
#
Loqi
A block list is a list of accounts that a user has blocked on a service or site https://indieweb.org/block_list
#
tantek__
block list << Check https://twitter.com/unblock_list/following for accounts to unblock, follow @unblock_list, and tweet “what blocklists” at the account and it will list any public block lists that you’re on.
#
Loqi
ok, I added "Check https://twitter.com/unblock_list/following for accounts to unblock, follow @unblock_list, and tweet “what blocklists” at the account and it will list any public block lists that you’re on." to the "See Also" section of /block_list https://indieweb.org/wiki/index.php?diff=51523&oldid=45441

@angeloGladding thanks for the definition. Just explaining how the community uses the channels, but you are right ultimately up to you to decide where the conversations goes. Still we all get gentle nudges from each other so if the discussion isn't taking a higher perspective on the community as a whole I know I get a reminder
