@JmacDotOrg
In 2018 I discovered the promise of IndieWeb and dabbled with it, making some modest contributions and becoming thoroughly sold on its potential. I hope to contribute significantly in 2019 (after tying up at least one prior commitment). I want to help people take back the web.

@JmacDotOrg
There’s no clear answer to this, and that’s something I hope to help with! The official answer is https://indieweb.org, an amazingly comprehensive wiki that (imho) doesn’t really summarize or sell the tech, yet. My own so-far posts on it: http://fogknife.com/tags/indieweb.html

↩️ Summarizing my IndieWeb ideals in one tweet: 1. Own a domain, and post your stuff to it, rather than to corporate “silos”. (You can syndicate to em, though.) 2. Use Microformats2, semantic metadata embedded in HTML. 3. Use Webmention, a protocol that lets sites cross-comment.

[tantek]
[jgmac1106] mind if I change the diagram to make the POSSE/Backfeed webmention orange arrows come from Janice instead of Isabel? I think POSSE/Backfeed makes more sense for original posts rather than comments/replies
#
[jgmac1106]
Yeah change all you want. It's a fist draft by the community
#
[jgmac1106]
I tried the svg Something not compatible with gDrawing export
#
[tantek]
I'm editing something you linked to called "Copy of IndieWeb Building Block Circle-original"
#
[jgmac1106]
Yeah that works. Then just export the png and swap it out
#
[jgmac1106]
Going to try and find someone to record a two minute video demoing how it works... Remix it all together
#
[tantek]
I thought I saw you also editing it
#
[jgmac1106]
I did but then made my own copies. Drawings doesn't have good real time collaboration IMO
#
[jgmac1106]
The microsub logo is just the websub logo upside down... But it works. The arrow points from web to reader

Will be something to really do with CSS... Thinking about how stories collapse in fun ways

#

weird I clicked the link on /graphics to the document and edited it
#
[tantek]
Oh I see [jgmac1106] added a microformats logo and text after I'd made a copy
#
[tantek]
huh - this Google Drawing for collaboration thing is not really working
#
[jgmac1106]
Partly my fault. I made my own copies and started editing those. The links I posted on wiki create new copies
#
[tantek]
oops not that one
#
[tantek]
now I'm losing track of too many copies

I agree with last 2 RTs. Blogs are great. I wish we all used them. But we don’t have a simple enough blogging product with people-connecting features for people to replace FB with a blog. #indieweb is making the infrastructure but we need a better product https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/vbanny/we-should-replace-facebook-with-personal-websites

Heya if it’s not too late, is anyone up for hacking [jgmac1106]’s building blocks flow diagram into a photo for the newsletter?
#
[tantek]
You’d have to be quick with making a “fake” one day event on /events for it linking to the /graphics wiki page and then markup /graphics with h-event including the top png with the photosrcalt template
#
[tantek]

ok new idea for newsletter based on that hack as a use-case
#
[tantek]
^^^ looks like the PNG didn't make it through to Twitter
#
[tantek]
but I did get it in the email version
#
[tantek]
Two things:
#
aaronpk
oh i think i remember now...
#
[tantek]
1. new pages list, if there's a u-featured image on the page, show it as a thumbnail next to the new page name
#
aaronpk
i think twitter only accepts jpgs
#
sknebel
no, you can use png on twitter
#
aaronpk
lemme check the code then
#
[tantek]
2. photos for the tweet, add new pages featured images to the list of places to check for images
#
sknebel
there's the interesting hack to get high-quality images on Twitter: if they are full-color PNGs that contain transparency, they don't get turned to JPG
#
[tantek]
this way we can create a new page like /graphics, give it a u-featured image to promote it, and have it be lower priority than any photos from events but still show up if there aren't enough from events
#
sknebel
so people post their art with a single half-transparent pixel in a corner to stop Twitter making it ugly
#
[tantek]
hah that's a great hack!
#
aaronpk
oops, looks like it was just hardcoded to look for jpgs and gifs
#
aaronpk
had to do special handling of gifs because if you include a (animated) gif you can't also include a photo
#
[tantek]
sknebel, perhaps a good Bridgy Publish feature request 😄
#
[tantek]
Does Twitter accept APNG?
#
sknebel
I don't think so
