Guys, quick, I need to know what topics will be discussed at IWC so I can write it up as an educational trip for work! :P
[Rose] joined the channel
#
[Rose]
Which IWC?
#
[Rose]
And what would be approved?
#
Zegnat
As I said before they are super stingy about flexworking (unless they need you to fix stuff until 23:00). But my direct boss is completely OK with marking the time as educational, meaning I wouldn’t have to work on my travel days at all
#
Zegnat
But wouldn’t have to take days off for it either
#
Zegnat
So now I need a pitch :P
#
Zegnat
I am aiming for Utrecht, but I am tacking on Berlin just in case
#
Zegnat
Hey, if the company sponsors my days off, maybe I can consider buying plane tickets for both ;)
#
[Rose]
rubs her hands like an evil genius
#
[Rose]
I very much want to into syndicating all of the things to everywhere
#
Zegnat
Berlin is probably the easiest pitch. It is at Mozilla so there will be opportunities to talk browsers, it is Germany so there is bound to be a session on the EU directives of some kind, and I'll be continuing to work on where I left off with autoauth. Which are probably all interesting things for management.
#
[Rose]
I know lots of people have got this down, but I want to be able to see a tweet on Twitter and hit a reply bookmarklet (or shortcut on iOS) and voilà.
#
[Rose]
Definitely, browser talk is important - especially with it now being FF vs Chromium everywhere
#
Zegnat
"is important", well, it is something that management will probably react to, yes.
#
Zegnat
Gotta stay in evil genius mode here
#

I need help with setting up the 2019.indieweb.org page and Tito ticketing for Berlin
#
[tantek]
Is anyone available to help with that?
#
Zegnat
I am probably available to help a bit on the page, or at least review and merge PRs to the repo. But I am not on the Tito
#
[tantek]
Looks like we didn’t even have a 2018.indieweb.org page for last year’s Berlin!
#
[tantek]
Thank you Zegnat that would be a big help
#
[tantek]
This year’s wiki page is still too small of a stub. Last year’s has a lot more of the info still:
#
[tantek]
In particular we have to put both IndieWeb CoC and Mozilla Community Participation Guidelines on both the 2019.indieweb Page and on the Tito
#
Zegnat
hmm, [tantek], do you no longer show HWCs in your events box in your homepage footer?
#
[tantek]
My events box is a manual static thing :/ and likely very out of date :(
#
[jgmac1106]
to clone event in ti.to tyou go to past event>customize in the left menu frame>click duplicate event button in the right frame, where on the wiki should I put this?
#
Zegnat
Yeah, it ends december 2018
#
[tantek]
Let’s be careful about which Tito we clone
#
[jgmac1106]
yeah it has to be a past event, I cou;dn't find a template feature
#
[jgmac1106]
so I would assume Berling would clone Berlin
#
[tantek]
[jgmac1106] if you mean where do you put the instructions / how to, please add them to somewhere findable on /IndieWebCamp_Organizing
#
[jgmac1106]
perfect will do when I get into the office
#
[jgmac1106]
and you can't get to the "clone event" from "create new event"
#
[tantek]
Zegnat my personal site event box (or flaws with) more dev/#indieweb than meta
#
Zegnat
Yeah, just brought it up here because I was looking for planned upcoming HWCs in SF ;)
#
[jgmac1106]
what messed me up is when a new city is cloning a different city, will write it up for both scenarios
#
Zegnat
I was working on dragging a friend with me to IWC Utrecht, who now tells me he will be in California at the time. So obviously I need him to go attend HWC SF if the dates align
#
[tantek]
Question for the Germans: would it make any difference (positive or negative) if we *didn’t* charge $5 for the “normal” IWC Berlin Tito tickets?
#
[tantek]
Zegnat see /Events for that. I keep that more up to date than my own event box
#
Zegnat
Will do. I just remembered you had the box and thought that would be a quick check
#
[tantek]
I just checked 2018 Berlin Tito and we did NOT charge for that
#
[tantek]
So I’m leaning towards keeping it the same for 2019 Berlin even though that was Joschi’s Tito for 2018
#
Zegnat
I don’t think any of the EU events have done a charge yet. Just Summit and some of the more recent US events that started with it
#
[tantek]
I don’t know if different rules apply for (even just €5) charging for tickets for EU events so I’d rather not experiment / learn on this one.
#
[jgmac1106]
Someone already made /indiewebcamp-berlin-2019 was that you just now?
#
[tantek]
Also Düsseldorf is also no charge I believe
#
[tantek]
[jgmac1106] what? I didn’t make anything today
#
Zegnat
Düsseldorf has never charged I believe. Probably because Marc doesn’t want to run two separate ticketed events at once
#
[jgmac1106]
There is already a ticket for 2019 Berlin in ti.to
#
[tantek]
Oh really? Who created it?
#
[jgmac1106]
probably not the persons fault, nobody would know the nav path to cloning an event. Clicking "New Event" makes sense
#
[jgmac1106]
I can't tell but I did notice you do not have access do you want me to give you access
#
[jgmac1106]
what is your email?
#
[jgmac1106]
tantek@tantek.com or do you need to use Mozilla?
#
[tantek]
Maybe Yulia created it?
#
[jgmac1106]
could have been me when I was trying to clone an event, currently only aaron, eddie, manton, myself, and tiara have access
#
[jgmac1106]
I will delete the current the Berlin event
#
[jgmac1106]
and then give you access to copy 2018

#

[tantek]: I don't think any German IWC has ever charged entry fees and I wouldn't start now
#
[tantek]
Ugh. Please so many bad assumptions there [jgmac1106]
#
[tantek]
Thank you sknebel
#
[jgmac1106]
i know, later for that, I think they did not use our ticketing system
#
[jgmac1106]
I can't find a Berlin 2018 in ti.to may have been someone else's event
#
[tantek]
[sknebel] can you note that in /IndeWebCamp_Organizing
#
[tantek]
[jgmac1106] re emails please never treat anything security or privacy as absolute because that is rarely the case. It’s nearly always a case of shades on a spectrum and making things easier or harder for baddies. Especially important with any information about those less privileged and more often harassed online
#
[tantek]
Ie do what you want with your own personal info but never treat anyone else’s info like that
#
[jgmac1106]

#
[jgmac1106]
okay but task at hand, before I need to leave, I did not archive the existing Berlin event but it needs to built out
#
[tantek]
IDK who created it
#
[tantek]
Last year’s Berlin Tito was by Joschi
#
[tantek]
It’s linked from /2018/Berlin
#
[jgmac1106]
not sure it matters, yes but outside the IWC account I think. I don't see any history of it
#
[jgmac1106]
I am thinking I may have done it mistakenly as only aaraon, eddie, manton, tiara, and myself have admin rights currently
#
[jgmac1106]
If you DM me your preferred email I will give you admin rights
#
[tantek]
We should have a European have access to Tito also
#
[tantek]
That list was all US people
#
[jgmac1106]
zegnat throw up the not it emoji fast
#
[tantek]
Zegnat would you be willing to be on the Tito list?
#
Zegnat
I do not organise IWCs at the moment though. But I am fine being conduit for others
#
Zegnat
My email address is as public as it gets, so just a matter of adding, [jgmac1106] ;)
#
[tantek]
Wait I thought you came to organizers meetups though
#
Zegnat
I organise HWCs
#
Zegnat
Ran IRL ones in the Netherlands, and the running online one together with sknebel
#
[tantek]
A-ha you are an *organizer*
#
Zegnat
Yes, just not of IWC unless I can get a co-organiser in Sweden ;)
#
[tantek]
Well even if you only help with the 2019.indieweb page and Tito, I would gladly have you as a co-organizer for Berlin (assuming you can be there :)
#
Zegnat
That is a currently ongoing conversation with my employer ;)
#
[tantek]
(Joining me and Yulia)
#
[jgmac1106]
I sent the invite...maybe being a Berlin organizer would help with the employer ask.........
#
[tantek]
I’m ok with a maybe for now
#
[jgmac1106]
bye all out to office, again sorry for the plain text email tantek
#
[tantek]
Yes Zegnat if it makes a difference, consider yourself invited “officially” as an organizer and add yourself as such to /2019/Berlin
#
Zegnat
Note that sknebel is on the ground in Berlin, is definitely (I think?) attending the event, and is probably as available online as I am, if you are looking for co-organiser (who will also be taking up HWC Berlin again)
#
[tantek]
No worries [jgmac1106] reachable moment especially for others’s privacy & security
#
[tantek]
Darn autocorrect. *teachable moment
#
[tantek]
Zegnat you stepped up to help with 2019.indieweb and that’s what counts. Also ok if sknebel wants to take that over from you!
#
[tantek]
Either way hoping you can both make it to IWC Berlin Organizers meetup 3 May Friday
#
Zegnat
I’ll probably have the initial PR in a bit for people to look at. Though it will be pending tito url
#
[Rose]
Zegnat I can be a remote co-organiser if that helps 😛
#
[tantek]
[jgmac1106] can you add Zegnat to Tito please?
#
Zegnat
[Rose], I kinda need someone on the ground to help venue and sponsor hunting. I lack the contacts. I would just be the hype man and the one with experience from attending several IWCs ;)
#
[Rose]
It was worth offering though 😉
#
Zegnat
Although that IndieWebCamping in my backyard can just be launched whenever! :D
#
[tantek]
All organizers: if you can make it please add yourself to /2019/Berlin/Organizers
#
[Rose]
If there are no drunk moose involved I'm cautiously interested
#
Zegnat
Hahaha
#
Loqi
hahahaha
#
[tantek]
[Rose] would be great to have you help Co-organize even remotely. What are you available to help with?
#
[Rose]
Depends what needs doing, naturally administrative work is easy to hand off to remote people
#
[Rose]
So wiki pages, emailing, etc.
#
[Rose]
But I'm pretty flexible and like solving problems
#
[tantek]
Both would be helpful
#
[jgmac1106]
I did add @zegnat
#
[tantek]
Thank you
#
[tantek]
Rose both would be helpful, and see /IndieWebCamp_Organizing for more
#
[tantek]
Are you able to participate remotely?
#
Zegnat
Hmm, I did not receive any email yet from tito
#
[Rose]
Shall do, I still have a note to create that page of "get started with implementing microformats" written down
#
[tantek]
Even if you’re not in Berlin in person?
#
[Rose]
I can participate remotely, but when it's not in the same/similar timezone to me it's hard. I'm coming to Berlin, unfortunately my flight doesn't land until 4 something though
#
[tantek]
Oh great you’ll be in Berlin!!!
#
[Rose]
And Düsseldorf, and Utrecht
#
[Rose]
I loved Nuremberg last year, so thought I'd just do all three in May 😉
#
[tantek]
Amazing!
#
[Rose]
Plus if I do manage to organise something here I would like to have attended more than one IWC beforehand 😉
#
[tantek]
[Rose] the organizers meetup goes til 18:00 with dinner after so you can definitely make it if you come direct from the airport!
#
[Rose]
Ok, I land at 16:15, I'm staying at the Nhow so I can drop my bag, and then I'll come join you all 🙂
#
[tantek]
Add yourself and just note your later expected arrival (Eg in parentheses)
#
Zegnat
Eeh, should these event pages really link to https://2018.indieweb.org/assets/2014-indieweb-movement.jpg ?
#
[tantek]
No they should not
#
[tantek]
We’ve asked for a while to stop using that image :/
#
Zegnat
Yeah, I vaguely remembered us saying that
#
Zegnat
It is still linked as the og: thing for cards on Twitter/Facebook etc
#
[tantek]
And that’s really bad. Please do whatever you can to remove that from any templates or wherever people are copy pasting it
#
Zegnat
Will do
#
[tantek]
Thank you
#
Zegnat
Trying to find out what actually is the canonical event page. Hmm. I should clean up this repo a bit later
#
[tantek]
If you need an image for Berlin use the group photo from last year
#
Zegnat
No need for an image, it is just a nice-to-have I guess. Looks like Austin dropped it
#
[tantek]
That’s quite a happy image of people and I think it would be reasonable to use
#
[tantek]
But only for 2019 Berlin
#
Zegnat
the pages, e.g. see https://2019.indieweb.org/austin, do not even display header images anymore. It really is just a leftover og: property
#
Loqi
IndieWebCamp Austin
#
Zegnat
Making it all the more puzzling
#
[tantek]
Its true that having a link preview image on Twitter & FB gets more attention / clicks / signups
#
sknebel
[eddie] you around? can we have meet.indieweb.org running in 2.5 hours?
#
sknebel
sorry, 3.5
#
[tantek]
What is leftover og?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "leftover og" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "leftover og is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
[Rose]
Perhaps we can have a mini script somewhere which generates an image that is a ticket with the words "IWC [Location]" on it as a placeholder to use for each IWC until there is a better placeholder?
#
[Rose]
Or perhaps just a standard ticket image with "IWC" on it would be a good start?
#
[tantek]
leftover og is an example of the downsides of the [[invisible metadata]] antipattern, and what happens when you update a page or copy paste a template and don’t realize you’ve kept or propagated obsolete or inapplicable [[OGP]] meta tags because they’re not visible when you view the page you’ve created; this error has happened with [[IndieWebCamp]] event pages as recently as 2018.indieweb.org.

Ending vHWC now after lots of event planning talk (people getting to Utrecht, remote viewing party for Summit in June, ...) Great chatting all!

Also, [tantek], I have not received any email from Tito, so I do not think I have access :(

That should be the last thing needed: update the Tito ID/URL in the PR, then get it merged and the page should be live.
#

Have we done any outreach for D&I / travel assistance for /2019?
#
Zegnat
I gotta run. If I have Tito access tomorrow I will have another look at setting up the Berlin event
#
[tantek]
[gRegorLove] not AFAIK. We should
#
Zegnat
Otherwise: the branch I added Berlin on is in the indieweb repo, not on a personal one, so anyone can go in and update
#
Zegnat
Cheers all!

Also should this “and” actually be an “or”? “not hetero, white, cis and male” on https://2019.indieweb.org/summit#travel-assistance also Oxford comma

In addition to putting the very next IWC in the sidebar, I think we should consider some amount of "in advance" IWCs when they're so clustered together that after one is over people wouldn't have time to plan for the next one if they only saw it in the sidebar
#
[tantek]
i.e. question to answer is which IndieWebCamp(s) to put in the sidebar?
#
[tantek]
possible answer, the very next IWC, and any IWCs happening in the next 2 (3?) months

I think any IWCs in the next 3 months makes sense
#
[eddie]
* any IWCs in the next 3 months that have RSVPs open
#
[eddie]
I think if it's in the sidebar people should be able to take an action to go
#
[tantek]
I'd say even save the date is enough
#
[eddie]
I guess so
#
[tantek]
the minimum action is to block it out in your calendar 🙂
#
[tantek]
Hmm maybe we should have Add To Calendar buttons?
#
[eddie]
That could be handy
#
[tantek]
like literally on each event page?
#
tantek.com

[eddie]
Yeah, that would be pretty awesome. If we could do a javascript script that we could include on every page that would read the h-event and automatically do the calendar stuff
#
[eddie]
I definitely don't think you'd want to re-do it every time, but if we have an easy to include thing
#
[tantek]
so this link works on a page with hCalendar: https://h2vx.com/ics/referrer

#
[tantek]
just verified that if you go to indieweb.org/2019 in iOS Safari and tap the Add to Calendar link it brings up an event summary with a "Add to Calendar" button at the bottom of the summary that adds it to your iOS iCal!
#
[tantek]
anyone else want to test it ^^^ on your mobile / browser and see if it works for you?
#
[tantek]
(I'm so glad I'm done with the H2VX migration and can once again feel confident with depending on it, e.g. can fix things when need be)
#
gRegorLove
[tantek], works to import to Google Calendar, though the date is wrong in the .ics: 2019-06-30 through 2019-07-01
#
gRegorLove
Let me double check. I think I downloaded it from the diff page instead of live page
#
[tantek]
yeah I got it wrong at first
#
[tantek]
(common problem in hCalendar due to the necessity of DRY violation for dates and times in classic mf1 before <time> element support, more clever mf2 value class pattern etc.)
#
[tantek]
common *authoring problem/challenge/gotcha
#
gRegorLove
Yep, looks good on fresh download and import.
#
[tantek]
[gRegorLove] then the "fun" stuff begins, where should we put such "+ Add to Calendar" links/buttons and what should they look like?
#
[tantek]
(note that you can also make hard coded Add to Calendar H2VX links that convert a specific URL, in case you want to add small "✚📆" buttons directly next to events in a list. see https://h2vx.com/ics/ for details on how to make such links)
#
[tantek]
also feel free to suggest a better icon / emoji combo
#
gRegorLove
Anecdotally, I've used https://emojipedia.org/calendar/ on some client sites. A couple of them ended up asking us to remove it because the fixed "July 17" was confusing
#
gRegorLove
I definitely like the "+ Add to Calendar" though. Maybe with some CSS to make it look like a button, different background color.
#
[tantek]
indeed which is why I used ✚🗓 on indieweb.org/2019
#
[tantek]
yes! feel free to experiment/tweak with that one in-place / in-context
#
gRegorLove
That one shows a date in some environments too https://emojipedia.org/spiral-calendar-pad/
#
[tantek]
worth collecting "Add to Calendar" example buttons from other sites?
#
gRegorLove
What is Add to Calendar?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "Add to Calendar" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "Add to Calendar is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
gRegorLove
(always entertaining how varied the emojis are, haha)
#
gRegorLove
Hm, Windows 10 shows the "1" on the spiral icon, despite what emojipedia lists
