omg i might have to remove chrisaldrich from this cause he posts too much 😂
#
aaronpk
well that was a fun exercise
#
aaronpk
consistent problem is the mf2 on wordpress pages is not good
#
aaronpk
here's an interesting one which apperaed on several wordpress sites: the h-feed has a bunch of h-entrys and also an h-card at the end of the list. I think XRay can handle that, but only if the URL of the h-card matches the URL of an author property of an h-entry. for some reason, the URLs don't match, e.g. http://boffosocko.com vs https://boffosocko.com/
#
[tantek]
Sounds like a good thing for IndieWebify.me to catch! File an issue there?
#
[tantek]
Because his URLs ought to be consistent
#
aaronpk
there isn't an h-feed validator in indiewebify.me
#
[tantek]
Then that should be the issue
#
[tantek]
And no reposts or replies.
#

Worth adding the h-card URL consistency point as a comment there then
#

We really need to put together some guidelines
#
aaronpk
this has been a fun experiment
#
aaronpk
we need more tools that consume feeds to work out these glitches
#

Perhaps we could use a pair of demo/keynote sessions: How IndieWeb works great on mobile today; Why IndieWeb on mobile is still a challenge - enough to still use silo mobile apps
#
[jgmac1106]
maybe its time for a POSSE only to open garden policy for me, even if it cuts my professional networks off at the knees
#
[tantek]
I also wonder if there’s an iOS / Android divide in how well IndieWeb works on mobile
#
[tantek]
I don’t know myself, yet I feel I’ve seen both successes and challenges/ regressions

#

#
[jgmac1106]
I will say I have been enjoying the one live and one remote keynote I have used last few IWCs I organized, was only way to work on representation as well
#
[schmarty]
i think i can manage that with some pre-planning and help

#

#
[tantek]
“I still run into iOS IndieWeb problems, like this and this, and when I do, I take a screenshot and go file an issue, from my website”
#
[tantek]
Bridgy POSSE to GH works *really* well
#
aaronpk
i don't post issues from iOS, but I do reply to issue threads from iOS :)
#
[tantek]
Does the Indigenous iOS UI have a “report issue” link?
#
Loqi
[EdwardHinkle] #61 Create a “feedback” post
#
[tantek]
And if so, can you setup a Shortcut so that a long press on that link can take you to a “reply” UI in your own website UI?
#
[eddie]
The idea I had was essentially that if you clicked "Provide Feedback" it would open up the reply UI within Indigenous directed at a hard-coded feedback post on my site
#
[eddie]
The only issue is if they don't have webmentions it won't send lol
#
[tantek]
Ah yes, report an issue right in Indigenous which posts it via mjcropub to your own site, and your site POSSEs to GH via Bridgy
#
[eddie]
Yep, that's the idea
#
[tantek]
That’s awesome but more ambitious
#
[eddie]
and also that the post would exist as a thing inside of Micro.blog so that if someone from Micro.blog does it, it'll show up as a thread inside of Micro.blog
#
[eddie]
definitely more abitious
#
[eddie]
ambitious
#
[tantek]
I mean even just a little diagonal banner link to the issues page on the repo
#
sknebel
[eddie]: also not that helpful if posting is entirely broken for some reason :D
#
[eddie]
lol sknebel fair enough
#
[tantek]
Then that leaves “making it work” up to the user to long press on it and use a Shortcut to their own web UI
#
[eddie]
Yeah first step is probably linking to the GH issues
#
[tantek]
That would be a great first step and would likely enable [schmarty] to demonstrate mobile issue posting flow too

I agree
#
aaronpk
yeah that's the browser doing it
#
[schmarty]
(the CDN url will probably change)
#
[tantek]
that can work for embedding

like in a video tag

ah, you can remove the CDN bits to get a more permanent URL directly to the media file.

↩️ yes #Archive.org is great! @IndieWebCamp Düsseldorf we posted 100% of session videos to @InternetArchive https://indieweb.org/2019/D%C3%BCsseldorf/Schedule#Saturday @janl not trivial, yet also not complicated @mountain_ghosts yes we can stop posting to YouTube. (... https://tantek.com/t50y1

↩️ We helped launch people’s careers because their talk was picked up by the YT algo. That one especially is hard to just turn away from.

↩️ Was this 2016 or before? 2019: YouTube algo is launching people's conspiracy theories, misogyny, & racism careers: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2019/06/08/technology/youtube-radical.html It rarely promotes sensible content, so why bother posting to it? https://tantek.com/t50y2

[tantek]
Really hoping we can come to a consensus about preferring Internet Archive video posting instead of YouTube
#
[tantek]
(at Organizers Summit)
#
aaronpk
i think it's pretty clear
#
[tantek]
I'm hoping we can even take a public stance about it
#
[tantek]
maybe help tip other conferences that way
#
aaronpk
our videos aren't regular conference talks, and we don't even attempt to gain a wider audience from youtube as a platform for discovery, so we aren't getting any benefits of hosting there
#
aaronpk
we don't even want comments on the videos, i usually turn them off
#
aaronpk
i do see jan's point about his conference videos tho, that's a very different thing
#
[tantek]
they're both long form sensible (non-inflammatory) content which the algo no longer prefers
#
[tantek]
so I don't buy the "picked up by the YT algo" argument any more. I think that's old data
#
aaronpk
possibly. there's plenty of people dedicated to figuring out what the youtube algorithm wants. plenty of people making videos about that on youtube 😂
#
aaronpk
counterexample: one of my coworkers' videos about oauth got picked up by the algorithm and has 243k views. it's an hour long.
#
aaronpk
still gets about 800-900 views a day and it was posted last year
#
aaronpk
so i don't think it's as simple as a single algortihm

↩️ I think there's a reasonable trade-off here -- although I am very cautious around youtube, I do get a good amount of tech talks coming up in my recommendations, so this is definitely still a factor in distribution

YouTube as syndication is OK. Archive.org works as primary
[tantek] joined the channel
#
[tantek]
KevinMarks, I think "YouTube as syndication is OK" is a privileged point of view. I think in 2019 it is no longer OK. The chance of doing greater harm seems more than the marginal benefit for (vast majority of folks) syndicating.
#
[tantek]
[jgmac1106] a "How to move to archive.org" section on the /YouTube article would be amazing. Please start / stub it!
#
[tantek]
and then we can put out a call for volunteers to start with the manual labor help of moving all our past IndieWeb videos over

make sure to welcome folks and let them know the meetup is for all skill levels. encourage questions! take a photo! take notes with people's domains!
#

ask people what they're expecting. don't be surprised if only 1-2 of those 12 turn up.
#

(assuming some open signup and not personal connections)
#
[tantek]
message them beforehand individually just to tell them you're looking forward to meeting them at the first ever Madrid IndieWeb Meetup!
