[tantek] From my understanding, that's currently (long since) been considered a barrier that disadvantages (and drives away) folks with less privilege or who feel marginalized / outside the pre-existing community

[tantek] We never emphasize "submit your proposal" for IndieWebCamps etc., and we certainly shouldn't, however I'd like to understand WHY these other conference organizers are persisting with a dated academic conf model

[jgmac1106] But not allowing funding All the funding pathways can sometimes misalign with D&I goals... Not disagreeing with the model. why I walked away from academic conferences and only promote this model

[jgmac1106] ...like if an organizer (say me) got someone to come to IWC NYC because I let them hang a poster cool...and if that advances academics owning knowledge from their own domain.

[tantek] the framing of "review" present a default of "you're not good enough until you're externally validated". that's the problem.

[tantek] especially "peer review" — goodness sakes, it's basically saying by default you / your work is not worthy until your "peers" say so. that seems horribly intimidating for folks that may already be struggling with lots of default prejudice/discrimination in their lives
