Is it a bad idea to use #webmention for async communication e.g. to trigger a build process? For example: A tweet was responded/sent, my site was mentioned and this triggers a rebuild of my static site to reflect this change on my site. https://webmention.net/draft/#introduction #indieweb #spec

hey folks we don't really have any prescriptive recommendations on the use / maintenance of wiki redirects (either on /wikify or /redirect) and before I go undo a lot of deletions of redirects, I wanted to ask explicitly for opinions here to see if we have any sort of community consensus
#
[tantek]
e.g. my general opinion: "redirects are cheap, and help discoverability via chat 'what is' questions"
#
[tantek]
so I'm fairly liberally pro-redirects. definitely open to hearing contrary viewpoints!
#
[tantek]
or people don't care one way or another that's good to know too
#
jacky
I'm down for redirections tbh
#
jacky
I just wish they weren't so noisy in terms of the general contributions
#
[tantek]
you mean noisy as in the wiki edits for redirects showing up here? or showing up in people's "User Contributions" page?
#
jacky
the former, not the latter
#
[tantek]
I wonder the same about deletions / undeletions
#
[tantek]
We can likely redesign the microcopy for those chat notifications so they're less noisy. Maybe even make them "funnier" with some clever Loqi-isms
#
[jgmac1106]
as someone who is learning I can sometimes find those redirect noise useful..connects dots
#
[jgmac1106]
have wondered if we need a channel just for updates
#
[jgmac1106]
like on Friday when it is a rush to get stuff done for newsletter
#
[tantek]
yeah that's come up before. I think that's the cheap reactive solution rather than addressing the harder problem of microcopy design
#
[tantek]
e.g. instead of [[Special:Log/delete]] restore  * Tantek.com *  restored "[[domain registrar]]": redirects are cheap, and help discoverability via chat 'what is' questions
#
[tantek]
[[domain registrar]] restored by Tantek.com because redirects are cheap, and help discoverability via chat 'what is' questions
#
[tantek]
That's just literal editing, like dropping the jargony [[Special:Log/delete]] (like no one cares to know about the Special: prefix or what wiki "namespace" in practice seriously, then rewriting as a single human readable sentence instead of LOG FILE ENTRY: INFO 1 : "INFO 2"

tbh, I'd be more interested in making them a bit more "invisible" (like on IRC, it could be a notice)
#
jacky
but yeah, translating them could help as well
#
[tantek]
another approach could be clustering, like only report deletes, redirects etc. once an hour at most, and list them all by type. The following pages were deleted: ..... or The following redirects were created...
[Sadik_Shahadu] joined the channel
#
[chrisaldrich]
I definitely like seeing them and dont' think they're too noisy. Having better "translations" and batching them may be useful if others think they're noisy.

what is indieweb?
#
Loqi
The IndieWeb is a community of individual personal websites, connected by simple standards, based on the principles of owning your domain, using it as your primary identity, to publish on your own site (optionally syndicate elsewhere), and own your data https://indieweb.org/IndieWeb
#
[jgmac1106]
