One of the biggest issues I have with some folks in the #Indieweb community right now are the people who want to demetricate social media posts. My opinion on that, is that metrics aren't bad in themselves.

Look this week for some posts on my site criticizing some of the tenets of the #Indieweb, and why I'm a citizen, but not a blind follower.

↩️ If you hang around long enough, you might notice there isn't a single overarching opinion on these kinds of things. The IndieWeb is made up of people from a wide background often with differing opinions.

↩️ Frankly I agree, I find value in some metrics for various reasons, it's not always a bad thing. There also isn't a single #IndieWeb opinion on this kind of thing, which is the great part about the IndieWeb.

Woah. A wonderful, visual ode to the indieweb. I miss it dearly. It's actually why I write and subscribe to so many newsletters. Worth reading.

huh aaronpk? also before that tweet there was no mention of "demetricate" in the chat logs, and there is still zero mention of "demetricate" in the wiki so I have no idea what this is about
#
[tantek]
is this about analytics?

Seriously, @Twitter @TwitterSupport?? You lock down our @tollwerk account and ask for age verifcation. I send you a copy of my ID within 24 hours. It takes you 32 days to get back to me and tell me that you can't reinstate accounts that have been locked for more than 30 days? /1 https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EW60ca0XsAI_OBL.png

Yes presumably a response to the metrics discussion from a few days ago https://chat.indieweb.org/2021-01-23 which had some pretty strongly worded opinions

lol clearly my fault 🙈

[tantek]
well if there's clear posts advocating for personal site analytics with use-cases, happy to cite those as "Why" as well on /analytics

I suppose the general answer is that we try to document both the reasons to do something and the criticisms about it for why not to, and encourage people to weigh and decided for themselves for their own sites

if there is a misinterpretation of one of those as "representing the IndieWeb community", the response shouldn't be "No it isn't!" but rather, yes, it's part of the community's opinions which are diverse on this matter as documented in the wiki page (link)

↩️ I'm with Leo when it comes to "own your content". For example, I hope that something like https://indieweb.org/ picks up speed.
