↩️ J'aime bien https://indieweb.org/POSSE comme compromis pour faire face à la réalité Après en pratique même les geeks et informaticiens utilisent peu le flux RSS du site et au final s'abonnent sur twitter ou instagram

I am once again wondering about Summit 2021 and if there are any conditions / variants that would make an at least somewhat in-person Summit possible this year.
#
[tantek]
Since total numbers and per-city-specifics are key aspects, I wonder if a multi-site Summit would be one possible option. E.g. if we can figure out even one city that makes sense for a local organizer, and they're able to figure out a hybrid online + in-person locals (and maybe a few travelers?) event, then we start with that and open it up to other cities joining in.

[tantek]: In Portland or alternative venue?
#
[tantek]
GWG, since I'm not in Portland, I'm not the person to ask, per the above 🙂
#
GWG
[tantek]: I am just wondering what you are thinking
#
GWG
I honestly have not been anywhere since March 2020 that wasn't a relative's home or my doctor, so...
#
[tantek]
I am thinking of asking Marc Thiele what the current odds are for in-person Beyond Tellerand in Düsseldorf in November
#
GWG
I have to decide
#
GWG
I WANT to see all of you though, even if remotely
#
GWG
I've been trying to keep the flame alive
#
[tantek]
GWG, I feel we've been doing a pretty good job keeping the flame alive as it were, even in this fully distributed / remote / video situation
#
[tantek]
GWG, this is the conf that I'm watching closely as an indicator: https://beyondtellerrand.com/events/dusseldorf-2021
#
[tantek]
I have more confidence in Germany getting its act together in a predictable way (vaccination %s, lowering case numbers to zero) than any other country where we have organizers
#
GWG
[tantek]: I have never been to Dusseldorf.
#
[tantek]
Also if a local event organizer is already doing the work of figuring out if they can do a more traditional paid conference, then it is likely that figuring out a lower attendance IWC/IWS should be an "easier problem" to solve
#
[tantek]
GWG, it's quite a nice place to visit
#
[tantek]
and has a strong draw for both folks from Germany, and nearby (e.g. UK)
#
GWG
[tantek]: I ended up in Berlin instead due timing, but...

tbh I'm very pro-remote-versions-of-summit for some time
#
jacky
if anything, it even makes it easier for _more_ people to attend (but the feeling of in-person is def hard to replicate)
#
GWG
jacky: I am happy to coorganize anything remote
#
GWG
But I know it loses something in the translation.
#
GWG
That's why I pivoted to trying popups
#
GWG
[tantek]: We should schedule the organizers pop-up then
#
GWG
Also the Microformats one
#
[tantek]
I'm kinda against a fully remote "Summit". There's key aspects of the Summit "experience", in-person serendipitous conversations, ability to easily bow out to work in a quiet corner for a bit while still overhearing some bits of discussions etc. Plus the social events before/during help provide a sense of connection, and hopefully safety & trust that you don't really get online
#
[tantek]
I also don't think remote scales to all day as much as we've tried. I for one have enough Zoom fatigue that I have a hard time emotionally justifying spending a weekend on Zoom in contrast to all the in-person things that I want to do (that are more emotionally supportive), even running/hiking trails solo
#
sknebel
same here
#
[tantek]
This is why I brought up the possibility of hybrids, to at least create a critical mass of that in-person experience, and *hope* that some of that translates to remote participants getting some of the "vibe", and being able to pop in and out at their convenience or for specific sessions etc.
#
GWG
[schmarty]: Would you be up for something in NYC? As part of a multicity event?
#
[schmarty]
GWG: i'm not optimistic about in-person stuff at the moment while numbers are still going up and up 📈
#
GWG
My brother is fixing up a house in upstate NY...I wonder if I could borrow it for a retreat
#
GWG
[schmarty]: Same, but trying to be optimistic

@qubyte
I added backlinks to my personal site. It's such a small addition, but I'm really excited about it. The intention is to make me use it more like a zettelkasten or a garden. #indieweb

well maybe Joschi is the person to ask since he's now organizing in-person HWCs!
