heads-up folks, I know we've been preferring Twitch for livestreaming (for folks that don't have streaming from their own website aaronpk 😛 ) — however, there's a boycott going on for Twitch's lack of responsiveness to calls for safety of streamers: https://www.npr.org/2021/09/01/1032873942/twitch-boycott-hate-raid-attacks (TW: racism, racist remarks)
#
aaronpk
I don't think we have streamed on twitch in quite some time
#
aaronpk
indiewebcamps that is
#
aaronpk
IIRC maybe one or two a few years ago when we first started talking about not using youtube, then we switched to the DIY one at https://indieweb.live and my plan for the next time we need to do that is to install OwnCast on https://indieweb.live
#
[tantek]
there's guidance on our wiki to use Twitch

[tantek]
what is streaming
#
Loqi
streaming is a method of content delivery where the user can start viewing or listening to media without downloading the entire file in advance https://indieweb.org/streaming
#
[tantek]
what is live streaming
#
Loqi
live streaming is the practice of streaming media (mostly audio or video) live as the captured event is happening https://indieweb.org/live_streaming
#
[tantek]
^^^ why do we have two? aaronpk or someone else with expertise in (live) streaming, can we converge these two? aaronpk?
#
aaronpk
haha i think you were the one who insisted on keeping them separate
#
aaronpk
streaming was for the case of streaming prerecorded content rather than having to download the whole thing, then live streaming came along later where the content is also produced live

IMO these days the original page on "streaming" isn't really necessary since it's not particularly novel anymore. in 2016 when it was created I think it may have been more relevant as a standalone page
#
[tantek]
should it just be a section of /video then?
#
[tantek]
I think current content of /streaming is all video, nothing about audio-specific streaming
#
aaronpk
that could work

we're not quite there [chrisaldrich] as much as we'd like to be
#
[tantek]
e.g. claiming to be inclusive then having photos with 90%+ white or white-passing folks does not show inclusivity sorry to say
#
[chrisaldrich]
signaling that it is a goal is certainly worthy though....
#
[tantek]
sure, documenting our intentions is worth doing later in that page
#
[tantek]
including specific impacts we would like to have (keynotes, speakers, participants etc.)
#
[tantek]
we certainly don't want to do what most corps are doing with big splashy BLM or inclusivity statements, then no actual follow-up on hiring, promoting, exec-hiring, board seats etc.
#
[tantek]
that's in many ways worse
#
[tantek]
talking about it, pretending as if that's progress when materially it's not progress at all
#
[tantek]
to be clear, I'm open to other language that says how we take deliberate steps to be more open / inclusive, but it must include those actions rather than just claiming we are or intend or want to be "inclusive".
#
[chrisaldrich]
definitely.
#
[tantek]
hey aaronpk, how can we figure out new & total wiki users for 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020? to help fill out /community#Wiki_Users
#
aaronpk
i think there are some mediawiki specialpages that can show that?
#
[tantek]
yeah I was going to dig
#
[tantek]
aaronpk, lol no there's SQL query in the comments
#
[tantek]
can you run this?

we have a lot of gardening / creating metaphors in IndieWeb principles etc. I'm wondering if we could also use some number of sailing / exploring metaphors, for folks that find that appealing
#
[tantek]
maybe this is a personality split kind of thing, are you a gardener or an explorer? are you a basebuilder or a shipmaker?
#
[tantek]
or do you find yourself in one mode or the other for periods of time? (🙋)
#
[tantek]
perhaps instead of gardens & streams, we need harbors & ocean currents? (cc: [chrisaldrich])
#

[tantek] Are you thinking that 2017 was sad and overwhelming as a result of politics in the US?
#
[tantek]
for those of us organizers here in the US who put work into making events happen, definitely
#
[tantek]
all of a sudden we had greatly decreased cognitive/emotional budgets because we had to deal with an unstable & abusive leader and the prospects of what random harm could happen or be enabled tomorrow, next week/month etc.

I have those
#
[tantek]
GWG, short answer is re-assessment of personal needs, better understanding of which needs are not being met, and taking actions towards getting them met. when needs are met, we have more energy and cognitive/emotional bandwidth to do more extra curricular things
