↩️ Sure! Maybe I’ll tweet you up if the results come up interesting. :) This Roam related Zoom meetup is happening Saturday and might be interesting! https://events.indieweb.org/2021/09/gardens-and-streams-ii-pPUbyYME33V4

↩️ That page also includes a compilation of current spam prevention techniques and brainstorming around those could be adapted to the IndieWeb and be complemented with or replaced by new techniques (like requiring moderation if sender is not from within one’s social graph)

@voxpelli
↩️ As far as I know, there hasn’t been any documented webmention spam yet, so far all such spam stems from implementations offering interoperability with eg pingback: https://indieweb.org/spam#Webmention

I think Loqi missed this tweet which referred to “IndieWebbers”, maybe a term to add @aaronpk? https://twitter.com/tomayac/status/1440695952809943048?s=20
#
@tomayac
There's a shady network of sites that re-publish other sites. An article on my blog was linked in https://www.theregister.com/2021/09/22/google_android_search_box_experiment/, and now I get spam Webmentions like https://blog.tomayac.com/2019/12/09/inspecting-facebooks-webview/#webmention-1274239 for all the sites that (illegitimately?) republish @TheRegister. What to do, IndieWebbers? 🤔

what are domain-deaths?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "domain-deaths" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "domain-deaths is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
[tantek]
domain-deaths are domain names that have been abandoned by their owner, and are either unresponsive, or vulnerable to being (or have been) taken over by bad actors, and thus any URLs to them should be unlinked and replaced with Internet Archive versions instead.

capjamesg[d]: IIRC mediawiki serves the page at the destination and uses the javascript history api to rewrite the address bar
#
capjamesg[d]
That explains why I couldn't see a redirect in curl or Python requests.
#
capjamesg[d]
Hm. I'm not sure how I counter that in code.
#
aaronpk
me either
#
aaronpk
i don't think it's an extension doing that, i think that's the default behavior, so there must be other people who have this same issue
#
capjamesg[d]
That is very odd.
#
aaronpk
maybe there's an extension that can turn them into http redirects for certain user agents
#
capjamesg[d]
I wondered why the wiki was being treated differently on redirects.
#
capjamesg[d]
Maybe. I'd love to see that.
#
capjamesg[d]
But I'm going to have to code for this edge case now I know about it 😄
#
capjamesg[d]
I'll fall back on duplicate content detection with hashing.
#
aaronpk
it's definitely not the only site you'll encounter that does this
#
capjamesg[d]
I am likely going to hash the first 200 words of a page (max) and use that to compare.

#
aaronpk
did you find a reference to it somewhere?
#
capjamesg[d]
I have just added support for reading rel=canonical links for now.
#
aaronpk
ah good thinking
#
capjamesg[d]
Hm. I thought I had.
#
capjamesg[d]
Maybe not.
#
capjamesg[d]
I saw a script that mentioned canonicals but the value was set to false.
#
capjamesg[d]
Maybe it's because I was redirected and I'm viewing the source of the redirected page.
#
capjamesg[d]
I need to dig into the docs.
#
capjamesg[d]
Nevertheless, I have a solution for now.

aaronpk, it may help to change the log hyperlinking logic for [[ ]] to notice a "|" and only hyperlink the part between [[ and | — see today's logs for an example
