aaronpk
please do
#
[tantek]
Ok will try to make a bunch of incremental improvements at least
#
[tantek]
There's also the bigger issue of the wiki in "mobile" of course, which the chat links to in the footer to join via other protocols/services
#
aaronpk
yeah i still don't understsand the state of mediawiki's default skins, things got complicated
#
gRegor
I think there's a newer version of Vector to install
#
aaronpk
i did install the new version, that seems to be the problem?
#
gRegor
Oh, recently? I meant newer than when we updated MW a year(?)ish ago
#
aaronpk
oh like a new new 2022 version?
#
[tantek]
yeah I'm pretty amazed that it's so broken on mobile
#
aaronpk
yeah I don't get it
#
[tantek]
I'm looking at chat.indieweb fixes first because those seem simpler
#
gRegor
Some point release on the Vector skin. I wasn't sure: https://chat.indieweb.org/meta/2022-11-16#t1668577560889100
#
[tantek]
lol we are using a downloadable font for the hamburger menu icon 🤦
#
aaronpk
i don't think we added a font for that... it must be part of the skin?
#
Loqi
[preview] [gRegor] Re: Vector (wiki theme), it looks like we might have `$wgVectorDefaultSkinVersion = '1';` set in LocalSettings. I see that value in some JSON when I view source. However I don't think we can just flip the switch on vector-2022 due to the homepage.
#
[tantek]
aaronpk, this is in the chat.indieweb styling
#
[tantek]
what is a hamburger
#
Loqi
The hamburger icon is a triple bar symbol commonly used to indicate a hidden navigation menu https://indieweb.org/hamburger
#
aaronpk
i believe that is the google material design css
#
[tantek]
of course it is, where else would overdesigned css come from 🦆

uh backend IRC archive issue for you aaronpk, why is https://chat.indieweb.org/2023-07-18 empty of any chats? I see plenty in the Slack backscroll
#
[tantek]
(here when I'm trying to demo how awesome IndieWeb chat bridging/archiving is to W3C folks today 😬 )
#
gRegor
The release numbers on Vector are weird. They don't seem to be bumping semver from 1.0.0 despite different releases.
#
[tantek]
or did we really not have anything today (UTC) in #indieweb other than "mayk oi"?
#
[tantek]
that's oddly quiet
#
[tantek]
gRegor maybe more like semaybever?

#
[tantek]
wow materialize--
#
Loqi
materialize has -1 karma over the last year
#
[tantek]
aaronpk I think you mean it's only been an hour of the 19th so far
#
[tantek]
it's still the 18th in PDT
#
[tantek]
ok here's some unicode to reduce dependency on materialcss external font loading: https://github.com/indieweb/chat.indieweb.org/pull/61
#
Loqi
[preview] [tantek] #61 unicode instead of depending on materialcss
#
[tantek]
aaronpk, LMK if you'd prefer to review/land/deploy "larger" changes or if this granularity/frequency is ok with you.
#
[tantek]
also, comments, review/feedback welcome from all in general on these PRs, especially if you spot a mistake!

Reminds me that I need to prioritize removing material css from my site. I barely use it anyway.

[tantek]
yay chat.indieweb update! looks better on mobile now
#
aaronpk
i had to do a few more css tweaks for the icons
#
[tantek]
and now I'm tempted to write a little bit of JS to do datetime math for enable the "Next" link/button as soon as the time has passed for there to be a "Next" page
#
aaronpk
there was some css in the framework that was adding underlines to `<abbr>`
#
[tantek]
lol of course there was
#
aaronpk
and the hamburger needed to be bigger and needed some padding
#
[tantek]
did you do a separate PR?
#
[tantek]
would love to see the changes so I can keep them in mind for any future edits
#
gRegor
hm did text get smaller on mobile?
#
gRegor
maybe not, I haven't looked at it on my phone in a while, but feels small
#
[tantek]
chat text shouldn't have changed at all
#
gRegor
I'm probably just misremembering
#
gRegor
It's 12px. 14px might be nice, looks ok in mobile preview on desktop
#
[tantek]
thanks aaronpk, that helps a lot. I think I can tweak further
#
[tantek]
gRegor, can you compare to other "chat" apps on your device and see if the size on chat.indieweb is comparable or larger/smaller than those other apps?
#
[tantek]
curious if we're not taking user preferences into account properly or not
#
gRegor
Discord looks comparable. Don't think I've changed any font settings in that app though. Let me check Slack.
#
gRegor
Though I find the dark mode contrast in Discord makes it easier to read
#
gRegor
Slack looks a tad larger, guessing maybe 13px
#
[tantek]
aaronpk, further tweaks to make the icons more consistent (and some spacing edits) https://github.com/indieweb/chat.indieweb.org/pull/62

gRegor, as font-size (and to some extent adjustability thereof) is an accessibility issue, can you file an issue in https://github.com/indieweb/chat.indieweb.org/issues with your request both exactly the smallest change you'd like to see, and perhaps what you'd ideally like to be able to do? I'll see what I can come up with
