Is any of the other organisers planing to come to the today's writing related Homebrew website club?
#
sarajaksa
I have some problems logging in, so I was wondering if there will be somebody else to start a Zoom room, in case I don't manage to figure it out my then.

capjamesg[d]: i didn't realize the discord had a 10 minute waiting period, is that intentional?
#
capjamesg[d]
I didn't realise either.
#

aaronpk I just downgraded our Verification Level for new users to Medium.
#
aaronpk
i kind of wish the chat was _entirely_ in discord because there are some fun things we could do, like granting a "has a website" role automatically by going through indieauth verification
#
aaronpk
i mean we could do that anyway, there just isn't an equivalent in slack
#
gRegor
Noo, only if it looked and worked nothing like Discord XD #TooManyDiscords

I've managed to avoid discord so far. I have 3 other slack communities I'm active in.
#
aaronpk
i'm definitely in more community discords than slacks now. the community slacks i'm in tend to be for work stuff, where more people are already in slack for their own company

i'm in an overwhelming number of discords (mostly muted). this is my last "big" slack outside of work.
#
aaronpk
out of curiosity [schmarty] is there a reason you use this slack instead of discord?
#
[schmarty]
probably it's mostly that i'm used to it. also the difficulties around the discord<=>irc bridge early on. (i recognize the slack bridge has also had plenty of difficulties over the years)
#
[Jo]
i only use slack for this. i use it over discord bc all my discord notifications are muted
#
aaronpk
i do like the discord notifications can be configured super granularly

I've landed on Discord myself. Came across both during uni. Part of it was that I liked that you could access it without an account (or I don't know if Slack can).
#

I generally found getting a smartphone caused me to start missing notifications for everything.
#
carrvo
I might have posted on Facebook (at the time) about it...7 years ago?
#
carrvo
But Discord was easy enough for my grandparents and being able to mute notifications for them from a distance.

Discord remains mostly unpleasant for me to use but I'm learning to get better at it. It is very "noisy" as an interface for me. It's too similar to standing in the middle of Times Square or being in a room full of Slot Machines. But again, I'm working with it.

I really dislike the default notification settings for Discord. I was on it for months before I finally figured out all the places I needed to change notifications. The granularity is good, but just not friendly imo. I've had to help a few people through it because notifications were overwhelming.
#
gRegor
That was a couple years ago, so mostly now it's fine, I change them as soon as I join a server
#
gRegor
I also found out way too late that you can group Discords into folders, drag and drop the icons to create a folder. Makes it easy to collapse the ones I rarely check.

the default notification settings are actually set by the server too, so some people never change their servers off the default "everything" which is annoying
#
aaronpk
i feel like discord should change the default setting, they even recommend it in the settings here https://media.aaronpk.com/2025/02/04145641-8277.png
#
gRegor
Ooh, yeah definitely
#
aaronpk
another trick to reduce clutter is to collapse the channel groups, then you only see the channel names when there are new messages https://media.aaronpk.com/2025/02/04145820-7946.png
#
gRegor
I also use "Mute Channel: Until I turn it off" pretty liberally. You can still get @-mentions from those channels.
#
gRegor
yeah, collapsing is good
