Hm, /firehose seems pretty much like a /composite_stream
#
gRegor
confusing things a bit more, I call mine just "stream", heh
#
[artlung]2
Really!
#
[artlung]2
What is composite stream?
#
Loqi
A composite stream is a stream that interleaves multiple types of posts, such as notes and articles https://indieweb.org/composite_stream

I have heard "firehouse" more often used in the context of "all posts from a silo" which can be so voluminous / rapid that the effect is like trying to drink from a firehose.
#
[tantek]
whereas "all posts from a personal site" are rarely (if ever, even on aaronpk's site) so voluminous / rapid
#
[tantek]
firehose not firehouse
#
[tantek]
the home page of Twitter used to show all recent posts from all accounts. and you could keep it open and watch it update in realtime (and not miss any posts)
#
[tantek]
at some point that became impossible

Yeah firehose is usually in the context of a silo, I don't think I would call even my own stream of all my posts a firehose

#
[tantek]
life stream was a term during that era for the personal equivalent
#
aaronpk
am I remembering it wrong? I could have sworn "firehose" was initially used specifically in silos
#
aaronpk
i remember specifically twitter, not sure if it was the first but definitely the first one i remember
#
[artlung]
I'd be interested in citations, examples folks can remember for both/all the terms. Partial clues welcome.
#
[tantek]
aaronpk, my memory is the same, firehose was used specifically to refer to silo feeds of everything posted there
#
[tantek]
I suspect Pilgrim's use may have been sarcastic
#
[tantek]
LiveJournal also had a firehose
#
[artlung]
There was very little of what Mark Pilgrim wrote or did that lacked sarcasm.
#
[artlung]
at one time developers could access the entirety of the Twitter feed in a similar maner
#
[artlung]
manner. output of *all* public posts
#
[artlung]
again, for a silo.
#
[tantek]
right, the Bluesky firehose is derivative of the Twitter firehose
#
[artlung]
added that dfn
#
[tantek]
what is a lifestream?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "lifestream" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "lifestream is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
[tantek]
will leave it to others if folks want to make that distinction
#
[tantek]
I will note https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lifestreaming as background / prior art
#
[tantek]
personally (IMO) I don't think it's either accurate or useful to refer to a personal "all" feed as a "firehose" because that dilutes (so to speak) the actual meaning of "you can't possibly consume this via RSS etc." that motivated silos to create their "firehose" features as proprietary streaming APIs
#
[artlung]
what is lifestreaming?
#
Loqi
lifestreaming is a digital log of all of ones activities in a "publish then filter"-way https://indieweb.org/lifestreaming
#
[tantek]
now if aaronpk's "all" feed included his every single recorded geolocation as a separate post, that might be close

#
[artlung]
what is all?
#
Loqi
all is a top level page on some personal sites that provides a composite stream of all kinds of posts https://indieweb.org/all

my gps logs are around 7-12k entries per day so that barely counts as a firehose tbh

#
aaronpk
oh yeah, the reason for calling it "firehose" and not a "feed" was specifically because of the metaphor of the overwhelming flow of water from a firehose
#
aaronpk
or maybe actually firehose vs stream
#
[artlung]
variations in how folks view them, but lots of overlap in the terminology. I also feel like there are combined explicit sidefile feeds for this and so far I'm *not* doing that.
#
[tantek]
because feeds didn't work as a technology for firehoses
#
aaronpk
right, the tech used in feeds didn't work for what they needed for a firehose

[artlung] I think some of my perspective / background here is that the emergence of "firehoses" as a "thing" was when [KevinMarks] and I were at Technorati, and it was very much a silo/hosting-provider only thing where they either needed to or preferred to provide a firehose for indexing rather than all the traffic polling individual feeds
#
[tantek]
Mark Pilgrim's use of "Firehose" was I believe irony and poking fun at the term rather than a serious use, and thus deserves to be taken with a grain of salt or two rather than a "first real example" sort of thing
#
[tantek]
That is, I don't think it's historically accurate to document Pilgrim's example as a "real example" as opposed to an example of humor / backhanded critique
#
aaronpk
makes me wonder what other current silo trends/terminology we can ironically publish on our own websites that will cause this confusion in another 15 years

#
[tantek]
indeed aaronpk
#
[artlung]
All I have on the firehose page is "One usage of the term" - I am not citing it as first or "real." As to "real" - I'm skeptical ironic usage can even apply. Popehat's Law gets all such would-be ironists in the end.
#
[artlung]
aaronpk that's a good cite, and very much similar to how Bluesky uses it - when you have a giant corpus of user activity - how to you consume, retransmit, manage such a thing?
#
[artlung]
At least I think that's how they're similar usages
#
[tantek]
I think there is a multi-user/multi-author meaning of "firehose" that's also lost with using the term to name a personal website feature
#
aaronpk
yeah, to me the core idea of "firehose" is that it's content from multiple users
#
aaronpk
like, you don't get to choose what you get in the firehose, it's the firehose
#
[tantek]
there's an aspect of "this is a union of a bunch of 'feeds' from individuals"
#
[tantek]
I suppose theoretically a personal site could include all the webmentions sent to it from other authors, other sites etc. in some sort of "firehose" that would be closer in meaning
#
aaronpk
ooh that's good
#
[tantek]
but no one has done that AFAIK
#
[artlung]
It may be a problem that everyone reads or hears the term knows exactly what it means but no 2 people really fully agree on a definition.
#
[tantek]
no I think aaronpk, myself, and I suspect [KevinMarks] would all agree
#
[tantek]
and the point here is based on historical needs and precedents. none of us made up this term
#
[tantek]
aaronpk, possibly also included in such a firehose would be all the original posts which are linked to from reply contexts
#
[tantek]
or even more, every original post you linked to from your own posts (e.g. webmention targets, not just sources)
#
[tantek]
if someone was posting /read posts for every post they read from the personal site social reader, then those original posts could also be included
#
[tantek]
from their* personal site social reader
#
[tantek]
but all of that is new brainstorming, no one has done / built that AFAIK (by any name)
#
[tantek]
lifestreaming comes the closest to that
#
[KevinMarks]
Several of the firehose feeds originally were individual atom/rss items concatenated.
#
[KevinMarks]
There were twitter versions of that for conference hashtags from about 2009 iirc
jjuran joined the channel
#

but *firehose* was specifically the new API twitter launched that scaled way beyond their JSON and RSS APIs
#
aaronpk
some of the aggregated views like conference hashtags used the firehose, but some used RSS/JSON
#
[artlung]
I remember at least one barcamp where I subbed, via Twitter, for SMS notifications by hashtag. And it worked great!
