That u-photo thing pops up once a month. There are so many wp related things that can go wrong to cause it.

when folks use the press-this plug in are you going back and manulaly changing the post-kind?
#
jgmac1106
nvm I see the indeweb bookmark bar
#
jgmac1106
Except it didn’t work. The like post-kind came put as an article: https://jgregorymcverry.com/txti-fast-web-pages-for-everybody/

I'm slowly getting better at using my breadcrumbs site to share out links/bookmarks with a little bit of commentary and a pull quote. I like how the comments/discussion come back to the post.
#
[wiobyrne]
The post kinds bookmark bar works for me. I also set up IFTTT to create drafts when I bookmark something in Pinboard or Pocket. But, when that system requires some monkeying with the URLS.
#
[wiobyrne]
I wish I could use the image URL that WordPress pulls in the details as the featured image for my post. Or, at least share/upload the featured image using the URL. For now, I'm opening the post/image in a new tab, downloading and re-uploading. It's time...but, it's time.
#
GWG
You mean the item that appears in the featured image box in Post Kinds? On my list
[xavierroy] joined the channel
#
[xavierroy]
[wiobyrne] I use Zapier to pull images
#
[xavierroy]
I use that to PESOS to my site for my book data and movie data. Some info here: https://zapier.com/blog/updates/662/wordpress-integrations
#
[wiobyrne]
@gwg I get a URL in that details box in post kinds.
#
[wiobyrne]
Thanks [xavierroy] I'll check it out.
#
GWG
Yes, I have plans to sideload the image someday
#
[wiobyrne]
For now, I'm sharing bookmarks and include an image from the original as the featured image on my post.
#
GWG
I started storing the featured image with that in mind
#
[wiobyrne]
If there was a way to copy/paste that link over to the featured image it would save some time. But, as of now, I'm still thoroughly enjoying the experience. It forces me to reopen the source, read/skim, pull quote and image, and post.
#
GWG
I will automate that someday
#
GWG
I just haven't decided how to design it so it doesn't force you to sideload dozens of images
#
[wiobyrne]
Absolutely. Totally understand.

[wiobyrne] I added an exclude feature image to most post_kinds. Have you tried a MicroPub client like Quill yet?
#
[jgmac1106]
My post kind bookmark bar doesn't publish to the correct post_kind
#
GWG
Bookmark bar?
#
[jgmac1106]
@gwg if you install press this plug in it includes indieweb bookmarklets for post kinds
#
[jgmac1106]
Has a bookmarklet for most post kinds. Think [schmarty] built them
#
GWG
Snarfed, actually, but it isn't compatible with Post Kinds
#
GWG
snarfed doesn't use Post Kinds. Many people don't
#
[jgmac1106]
I did not know that. That clears up the confusion. Is he is using them as categories?

[wiobyrne] You might also try a simple plugin like https://wordpress.org/plugins/external-url-featured-image/ which you can use as a stopgap until the post kinds plugin handles featured images natively
#
Loqi
[Jhon Marreros Guzmán] Description This Plugin allows to use an external image as Featured Image, this can be especially useful if you house your images in another location. This Plugin is compatible with Nelio External Featured Image Metadata, so you can reuse your data ...
#
[chrisaldrich]
When it does, you should then be able to disable the plugin and, without any loss of continuity, the post kinds will handle the image instead of the stopgap plugin. Then you'll only need to copy/paste the image URL (unless you wire up something separately).
[wiobyrne] joined the channel
#
[wiobyrne]
Agreed. I tried a different plugin, and it didn't work correctly. I'll test this one out. I could just copy/paste the URL that is getting scooped up by the post kinds plugin.
#
[chrisaldrich]
It'll also cut down drastically on the amount of data/storage on your install (if you're self-hosting) though it does make you more reliant on the original page staying up.
#
[wiobyrne]
That was one of the challenges that I saw. There were complaints online about the original going down, and then you lose the image.
#
[wiobyrne]
Too bad there isn't a way to save it with the Internet Archive using Amber.
#
[wiobyrne]
It looks like Amber hasn't been updated in some time. https://wordpress.org/plugins/amberlink/

What is archive?
#
Loqi
archive in the context of the indieweb refers to date-grouped (often monthly) sets of posts (AKA personal historical archives, a common form of navigation), but can sometimes mean archival copy, a copy of a web page made (often by someone other than the author) at a particular point in time https://indieweb.org/archive
#
[chrisaldrich]
what is archival copy?
#
Loqi
An archival copy is a copy of a web page made (often by someone other than the author) at a particular point in time, that can be used as a reference if the original disappears or is temporarily unavailable https://indieweb.org/archival_copy
#
[wiobyrne]
Having the image URL pull from an archived copy of the website on the Internet Archive...as opposed to the original.
#
[chrisaldrich]
Maybe I documented it somewhere else... I use https://wordpress.org/plugins/post-archival/ to send URLs of things I post to the Internet Archive

#
[wiobyrne]
Do you have a post in which you document all of the plugins you use with Wordpress?
#
[wiobyrne]
..and how you use them? 🙂
#
[chrisaldrich]
I should do that one day, but the next closest thing I've got is a collection of posts: https://boffosocko.com/research/indieweb/

#
[wiobyrne]
Thanks. I'll keep stalking, skimming, and learning.
#

I would love to pull some of you on a YouTube video and have you do a behind the scenes tour of your website...and the processes/tools you use to make things happen.
#
[chrisaldrich]
It's got a lot of moving parts, but it's also incredibly interesting and powerful.
#
[chrisaldrich]
Maybe it's time for a new virtual Homebrew Website Club meeting? We could do just that?
#
[wiobyrne]
That would be awesome.

Though @gwg suggested we wait as big changes coming
#
[wiobyrne]
I think there is value in pulling in individuals to "show how they work."
#
[jgmac1106]
Massive value
#
[chrisaldrich]
[jgmac1106] don't chop too heavily... I'll try to do some new shorter segment ones sometime this week.

[wiobyrne]
What are the tools, processes, etc. What is the thinking, purpose, etc,
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "tools, processes, etc. What is the thinking, purpose, etc," yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "tools, processes, etc. What is the thinking, purpose, etc, is ____", a sentence describing the term)

@gwg also suggested big changes down the pipe

what is hwc?
#
Loqi
Homebrew Website Club is a bi-weekly meetup of people passionate about or interested in creating, improving, building, designing their own website, in the same structure as the classic Homebrew Computer Club meetings https://indieweb.org/hwc
#
[wiobyrne]
Also guide students and believe that I need to fully understand before I teach them. My motto is, "what would this look like if it was simple?"
#
[jgmac1106]
We could set up a virtual HWC be awesome
#
[wiobyrne]
I saw that there was a WordPress meetup in Charleston a couple of weeks ago. I've been meaning to reach out to the local coding camps/clubs to see what others are doing.
#
[jgmac1106]
[chrisaldrich] what is your time zone?
#
[wiobyrne]
But, a virtual HWC would be cool.
#
[chrisaldrich]
I'm in Los Angeles.
#
[jgmac1106]
[wiobyrne] I am working with my Chamber of Commerce to start up a HWC for small business but has to wait until after July

post kinds plugin adds microformats to the stuff it handles directly. Those like h-entry and h-feed are typically handled by either WP core or the particular theme.
