huh I thought you had added it
#
tantek
checks the history again
#
tantek
chrisaldrich, agreed with you that "Indiemark is a better structural framework for those building sites from the metal up", maybe we can do some rethinking during IWS
#
tantek
sounds like we are at least agreed that "future revisions could leave it out for jargon reasons" so we can revert the structure of /Getting_Started_on_WordPress to something more like this version: https://indieweb.org/wiki/index.php?title=Getting_Started_on_WordPress&oldid=29827
#
tantek
curious what other folks think who have thought about how to better/best present "Getting Started on WordPress". (GWG, jgmac1106, miklb?)
#
jgmac1106
I would drop the “for-beginners” from this: https://indieweb.org/User:Jgregorymcverry.com/getting-started-with-WordPress-for-beginners and then have another page for theme developers. As I said we are hoping to huddle together at Summit and think about all the pages. In the end the pages build into the plugins and the “more details” page on wp.org matter more IMO
#
tantek
there's still an important distinction between "new to IndieWeb" (but longtime WordPress user, of which there are many), and "new to IndieWeb" (and never had a site, but has heard good things about WordPress, has friends that use it, etc.)
#
tantek
both are beginners of a sort, but need very different tutorials
#
jgmac1106
Feel that. Been a Wordpress user for seven years and still can’t figure this stuff out sometimes.
#
tantek
I'd almost rather focus on that crowd first (or more importantly) for IndieWeb WordPress tutorials, than the *complete* beginner, who I think would do better to start with a much simpler (easier to learn, maintain) GitHub static site with free domain hosting.
#
tantek
We've had good luck with helping complete beginners setup such GitHub static sites during IWCs and then even just occasionally update them. Whereas such beginners who end up setting up WordPress either get frustrated from the complexity, or give up and their site is taken over because they forgot to click something (or just login etc.) for an "automated" security update.
#
tantek
I'm open to hearing counter-examples (of either) since that's just personal anecdata.
#
[chrisaldrich]
the nice problem we've got is that the WP pages should have relative outlines for the first three generations... it's definitely something I've been thinking about.
#
jgmac1106
Been writing that page using the limited data I have from my user story interviews and my own learniings as the chatroom helps me
#
jgmac1106
[chrisaldrich] +1 to determining common text structure before just editing
#
jgmac1106
off to put my oldest to bed and then see if I get more than n=1 tonight
#
[chrisaldrich]
jgmac1106, I've been breaking that long 2 hour WP for IndieWeb video down into constituent parts: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLUkDy-CP92u1r54VkKzN0Pty5jtTQcr9H
#
jgmac1106
perfect, that will matter a ton.
#
[chrisaldrich]
Hopefully I'll figure out how to lay out the downloading, activating, settings, and use of the fleet of common plugins soon.
#
jgmac1106
Still want to iterate that the gettign started page in Indieweb plugin, plus the “more details” pages of each plugin important and in bes world would simply match that plugin description page on wiki
#
tantek
no objections to reverting to the pre-IndieMark structure then to at least get a quick incremental improvement?

[jgmac1106]
yes delete indiemark, confuses everyone. i still don't even know what it really is
#
tantek
jgmac1106: well that's worth a good Q&A then perhaps in person Sunday night! Maybe we can even record it podcast style since GWG and chrisaldrich seem to be having so much fun with that format
#
tantek
what is IndieMark
#
Loqi
IndieMark is a set of metrics for measuring the indieweb-ness of a site, and a step-by-step approach to incrementally adopting indieweb features on your site https://indieweb.org/IndieMark

That would be fun

GWG
tantek: Are you having fun with it though?
#
tantek
with your podcasts? absolutely. they always make me smile and happy to hear from you both.
#
jgmac1106
I probably won’t get in early enough on Sunday. Land at 8:01
#
GWG
I get in at 9, at the train station
#
GWG
So, if 8 is too late
#
jgmac1106
though I think [gwg] and [chrisaldrich] go to bed at 4;00am and [tantek] gets up at [3 am] so it could work
#
GWG
Re the podcast, I enjoy talking about the Indieweb and chrisaldrich is good company
#
GWG
I act like I am talking to him and we just record that
#
jgmac1106
then it is on, be fun. The podcast been hugely helpful to the community as well.
#
jgmac1106
“I act like I am talking to him and we just record that” defining a good podcast
#
GWG
I have a digital recorder in my bag
#
GWG
I should have said just him, as opposed to an entire audience
#
jgmac1106
still definition of good podcast its not broadcast, we want the convo
#
GWG
Well, I will not have the usual fancy equipment, but I have a nice digital recorder
#
jgmac1106
I podcast straight to vinyl
#
GWG
Fun
#
GWG
33, 45, or 78?
#
jgmac1106

Wow! That is amazing to hear. I was just going through the plug-in in the #WordPress repo trying to figure out how you do a “PR” or if I should just fork the plugin. This is even cooler! If the team has questions stop by the microformats chat htt...

I just got bombarded with anonymous webmentiosn but they were all from myself from over the last month or so.
#
GWG
What features are those?
#
[jgmac1106]
The ol ul of highlighted areas adding hyperlinks sometimes. I like you live in the text editor but was checking out the other side in case my students use your theme
#
[jgmac1106]
Can file issues, there are a few I noticed
#
GWG
You'll have to show me, I don't write posts in the text editor

just got this error from trying to publish a post on a wordpress: Fatal error: Uncaught exception 'DefensioConnectionError' with message 'Impossible to open socket to api.defensio.com:80'
#
tantek__
is anyone using defensio anymore or should I just disable it?
#

the post was published no problem. I don't understand what an anti-spam plugin would have to be doing in the process of publishing a post.
