# [dougbeal] You have the setting turned on?
# [dougbeal] A few required approval, or maybe the first one
# jgmac1106_ yes, and none pending
# jgmac1106_ I don’t have either box checked
# jgmac1106_ I could just leave myself a comment but what’t the fun in that
# jgmac1106_ If I recall correctly @dougbeal if you look at the source code of the event the p-name or e-content that twitter usually uses is missing I think
# jgmac1106_ Been ahwile but same happens to me

# jgmac1106_ I will have to go back and find my notes, helping my students now, events are tough for syndication
# jgmac1106_ You can always just do a new note and contain a link to the event and post that to twitter

# [xavierroy] [dougbeal] an advantage of using emojis in tags
# jgmac1106_ @xavierroy I actuallly used the search just before you posted that as I try to figure out why I am not getting my own webmentions
# jgmac1106_ I need to go back and add your display tag code
# jgmac1106_ also makes me think we don’t need 1,000 new postkinds, just emoji tags,

# [jeffperry] Hey I am not sure if this is the right place for this but I am working on editing my php to use a certain plugin and I was wondering if anyone here is able to help
# jgmac1106_ Welcome [jeffperry] is it an indieweb plugin or something else?
# [jeffperry] something else.
# [jeffperry] From what I have read it can be as easy as an IF statement in the php but I know nothing about php and I can’t seem to figure it out myseld.
# jgmac1106_ you can ask but the expertise will really be around other stuff, we just had a long discussion about linkrolls (more a fan of coming up with my own design and name) but if you look on https://boffosocko.com you will see discussion
# jgmac1106_ oops forgot about that, @chrisaldrich
# jgmac1106_ there is an active wordpress irc channel on freenode and other servers
# [jeffperry] oh
# [jeffperry] I can try there I guess.
# [jeffperry] thanks
# [jeffperry] also, what is a good IRC app for freenode on macOS?
# jgmac1106_ I am using Colloquy now, others have different ideas
# [jeffperry] ok
# jgmac1106_ there are a ton of plugins that will do what I think you are trying to do
# [jeffperry] For me this is the only one that I coudl find
# jgmac1106_ what is your goal?
# [chrisaldrich] It's relatively easy if you know how to go into your theme and write php, but I don't think there's a modern plugin which does that unless there's a new one in the last 6 months.
# [jeffperry] To have a custom field that allows me to put a link to an article I am referencing in the title but also have a permalink at the bottm of my post. Basically exactly what websites like Daring Fireball, MacStories, and 512pixels have.
# jgmac1106_ why not use a bookmark: http://jgregorymcverry.com/kind/bookmark/
# [jeffperry] The Daring Fireball one does it in my RSS but if I want it to work on my website I need to edit the theme’s php. However I know nothing on how to do so, nor do I know which ones to edit
# jgmac1106_ or a quote for that http://jgregorymcverry.com/kind/quote/
# [jeffperry] My theme doesn’t have that as a post option
# jgmac1106_ misunderstood, can you post an example?
# [chrisaldrich] [jeffperry] does that plugin not work?
# [jeffperry] Not for my theme.
# [jeffperry] Sure
# [jeffperry] https://daringfireball.net
# jgmac1106_ not the entire blog, a specific post
# [jeffperry] Sorry about that
# jgmac1106_ that is just a quote post, if you choose that post type you will get that
# jgmac1106_ I see do you want the link displayed as ⌘ Permalink?
# [chrisaldrich] You can kind of use pressforward for something like that but it's heavy because it has a built in rss reader and lots more functionality.
# jgmac1106_ bit a custom css or changing your theme template I think
# [chrisaldrich] I have some stuff documented on my site relating to it.
# jgmac1106_ can you do a quote post from your blog and tell us how you want it different?
# [jeffperry] yeah one sec
# [jeffperry] I want the title to have a link to the website I am quoting followed by a unicode arrow
# [jeffperry] I also want it to have a “(Permalink)” hyperlink at the bottom pointing to my post at the link I sent.
# [jeffperry] If that makes sense
# jgmac1106_ here is how it looks on my site: http://jgregorymcverry.com/4799-2/
# jgmac1106_ look at that and let me know what is missing from what you want
# [jeffperry] I would like to have a Title of the Article as the title for the sake of my RSS feed and a permalink at the bottom to the post on my website.
# jgmac1106_ …ohhh okay,
# [jeffperry] Yeah
# [jeffperry] Sorry if I didn’t make that cleat
# [jeffperry] clear*
# jgmac1106_ in the ifixit example they gave their article a title
# jgmac1106_ ahhh I think you made me realize I want the same thing here is my feed: https://jgregorymcverry.com/kind/quote/feed/
# jgmac1106_ doesn’t include the source or my quote…..Let [chrisaldrich] poke around but me thinks there is probably already a solution
# [jeffperry] I think there probably is too but I don’t know enough about this to figure it out myself.
# jgmac1106_ the permalink to source is easy(ish), you can move that in the template page of your theme
# jgmac1106_ [chrisaldrich] wondering if there is a way to manually set up a page to collect all the webmentions your article is getting to show how webmentions work in real time
# jgmac1106_ fyi [jeffperry] here is the indieweb.org article on quotation: https://indieweb.org/quotation
# jgmac1106_ based on its listing here the post type is considered “experimental” https://indieweb.org/posts but I like your idea of source as title, gonna try and figure it out myself, never liked the way quotes syndicate
# [jeffperry] Same. Let me know what you find out
[eddie] joined the channel
# [chrisaldrich] [jgmac1106] perhaps it could be done with webmention.io, but I've never played with it?
# gRegorLove A post with a title, external link, and optional quote sounds more like /bookmark
# [chrisaldrich] [jeffperry] this might also work https://wordpress.org/plugins/link-blog/
# [chrisaldrich] I agree with gRegorLove a and post kinds will do that automatically
# gRegorLove The RSS feed is an interesting issue, though. Don't have a good solution there.
# [jeffperry] Honestly I think the easiest solution is to add an IF statement in the php
# gRegorLove Unfortunately that's often going to be a pain point trying to "coerce" these new post types into a CMS like WordPress

# [jgmac1106] [gregorlove] will take a look at post kind could "block quote" or the url get the p-name?
# gRegorLove Not sure if Post Kinds does anything special to customize the XML feeds, so the microformats used may not impact it.
# gRegorLove It seems likely it's using the core WP field "title" in the XML
# [jgmac1106] Ohh okay will play. It looks d better in inoreader
# [jgmac1106] [jeffperry] the bookmark post kind does look like you want in many ways http://jgregorymcverry.com/kind/bookmark/
# [jgmac1106] [gregorlove] was right

# [jeffperry] How does it look on an RSS feed?
# [jgmac1106] Dunno add /feed after link and check it out
# [jgmac1106] I just checked in Feedly, not good @gwg I can try and poke around the theme to see how the xml works but I will be poking around the dark.
# [jgmac1106] I will play use this? https://codex.wordpress.org/Customizing_Feeds
# [jgmac1106] I would need to make a custom feed for each archive I am thinking.
# [jgmac1106] .... But I always forget where the taxonomy/archive views live I know I wouldn't use template-parts
tantek joined the channel
# [jgmac1106] I want to try, and now I know where @jeffpery got the idea for needing just an "if"
# [jgmac1106] But if you could point me to where what determines the archive view similar to what like template-parts that would help
