just in: being prompted for installation of WP 5.0
#
GWG
cjwillcock: Resist the urge?
#
cjwillcock
I'm scared
#
GWG
I'm steadfastly ignoring it. I just released an update to my Post Kinds plugin with a widget

Haha was just going to pop in here and mention it's out
#
GWG
Widgets are on the chopping block soon

[grantcodes]: Rubbing salt on the wound?
#
[grantcodes]
They'll still be there but it's all Gutenberg all the way 😛
#
[grantcodes]
Nah I actually really like Gutenberg, already using it a lot for professional work
#
GWG
[grantcodes]: Okay. I am not ready to lose my tinyMCE
#
[grantcodes]
Not really sure what it has that Gutenberg doesn't though?
#
GWG
I just don't like blocks.
#
GWG
But maybe I'll change my mind
#
GWG
Right now, I told someone I'd go pick them up
#
GWG
Why not enjoy a new Post Kinds.
#
GWG
Now with widget
#
[grantcodes]
If you switch the toolbar about it ends up with a more classic view with controls at the top instead of floating
#
GWG
I'll see

GWG++ I like that post kinds widget there, hanging out in my sidebar, nice addition!

does the wordpress websub hub send notifications only for the Atom/RSS feeds, or also for feed pages etc? if the latter, what does the notification payload look like?

I think it’s a great strategy.
#
GWG
What?
#
GWG
sknebel, never looked, sorry
#
GWG
What strategy?
#
sknebel
no problem. [pfefferle] wrote that plugin, right?
#
GWG
Yes, he did
#
GWG
Khurt, did you catch my explanation of how to do rel feed on a menu?

dang it, my hosting service updated my WordPress
#
[Serena]
I'm guessing that means I lose Post Kinds?
#
sknebel
Unless I misunderstood it, you can install a plugin and get the old editor with the plugin integrations back?
#
petermolnar
[Serena]: can you install plugins? If yes, install "Classic Editor", and, in setting, set it to completely disable Gutenberg

Good morning, IndieWeb! I did update to 5.0 but also installed Classic Editor... Seems like I'm in good shape. Will check back in after I actually publish a post...

@meyerweb
@zeldman But not with WordPress, apparently: I can only log into my brand new WP 5.0 blog admin using Chromium browsers. Firefox Nightly just loops me back to the login screen.

I upgraded one of three web sites I manage but installed the Classic Editor. I am already looking for alternatives to WordPress just in case Gutenberg remains unusable to me.
#
[Khurt]
No I did not.
#
[Khurt]
Yes. But the plugin is a temporary “workaround”. No support past 2022.
#
[Khurt]
Off to meet a colleague for lunch and discuss how much we dislike the new web.

anyone other than grantcodes (and GWG :P) upgraded to wordpress 5? any thoughts?
#
snarfed
i know about gutenberg and blocks but have no opinions or experience yet
#
[jgmac1106]
I did in all my online classes. Old wine new bottle
#
[jgmac1106]
None of those are with an IndieWeb theme. Just WP out of box

[snarfed] me... a bit fragile at first, but after clearing all caches and deactivate and reactivate all plugins it seems to work solid and I love the new editor...
#
GWG
I am going to have to spin up a test instance and see what I want to do with my projects
#
GWG
They just broke or will break everything
#
GWG
I don't know still how blocks will with Microformats
#
GWG
Anyone given it thought?
#
GWG
I did consider parsing post content using php-mf2 instead of storing things in post meta at one point
#
GWG
But... that still isn't blocks
#
snarfed
imho https://github.com/snarfed/wordpress-micropub/issues/85 is still one of the single most important things we need to do for indieweb/mf2 on wordpress
#
Loqi
[dshanske] #85 redesign to coordinate with other mf2 plugins and themes
#
snarfed
(directly related to blocks + mf2, etc)
#
GWG
Yes, but I tabled it myself because I thought the solution would change under Gutenberg.

maybe! and gutenberg is here! and has been for a while :P so we're definitely not blocked on anything.

Re mf2 and blocks, I think it's still going to difficult, if not worse now. You could make blocks that have good mf2 markup but I can't see that being very useful tbh
#
GWG
So, how do we solve the problem?
#
GWG
Ignore Gutenberg?
#
[grantcodes]
I'm not sure for example if with mf2 you can have a containing element which would be parsed as the content property but have content then a photo (to be parsed as a photo property) then more content then a video (again video property) and then more content again. That is the power of Gutenberg but not sure if that works with mf2
#
GWG
That's what I was trying to figure out
#
[grantcodes]
If you ignore Gutenberg you won't have any new users
#
[grantcodes]
Or fewer anyway
#
GWG
Exactly
#
GWG
But I don't have to rush
#
GWG
The plugin that would work first with Gutenberg is my location plugin
#
GWG
So I might try experimenting with that first
#
[grantcodes]
Custom themes could be awesome with mf2 and blocks but generic themes I don't know
#
GWG
I need more time I guess
