<[tantek]> "superkuh, a very large instance,..." <- My main instance before building my own was mastodon.cloud — and not being able to do a lot due to being stuck on 3.4.3 is one of the reasons I wanted to explore turning Wordpress into an AP implementation
#
[tantek]
is there any point to liking non-POSSEd tweets any more? was there ever?
#
[tantek]
maybe to trigger an Internet Archive copy?
#
[tantek]
if archiving is the only meaningful use-case left for that, then wouldn't a simple /bookmark post suffice? why provide any analytics to the silo?
#
[snarfed]
my main use case is sending a mesage to the author
#
[snarfed]
(also storing the like on my own site, but that's probably already implied)
#
[tantek]
a message? like a head nod? or an intent to engage in conversation?
#
[snarfed]
the former. if I want to talk, I reply

!tell [chrisaldrich] you seem to have published the only instance of the phrase "billion dollar typewriter" on the web (well, which just got spoiled by this entry) https://boffosocko.com/2019/12/18/indieweb-jealousy-list/#comment-273174 and your POSSE tweet copy of course https://twitter.com/ChrisAldrich/status/1207506138071097344
#
@ChrisAldrich
What I wouldn’t give to have a Micropub client as slick as @Medium. That would truly be the billion dollar typewriter! #WebJealousy https://boffosocko.com/2019/12/18/indieweb-jealousy-list/?replytocom=273174#respond

Ok, I'll tell them that when I see them next

!tell [chrisaldrich] close, but rather with a hypen and used as an adjective/descriptor was the phrase "billion-dollar typewriter industry" in https://www.porchlightbooks.com/blog/changethis/2004/the-bootstrapper-s-bible

I have been doing some internet archive spelunking and found that Eschnou posted his first use of @-domain.tld links on 2013-03-26! so now I have to browse chat archives around then to see if it was something we came up with in chat or he came up with it and went for it singlehandedly

[tantek]
Nothing found about that in chat, however, I did find that two days before that I had asked aaronpk to come up with a name for his publishing system, and in making a silly suggestion ("Bloqi" lol) which I'm still pleased with, he came up with "p3k" where the "p3" is short for "personal publishing platform"! https://chat.indieweb.org/2013-03-24#t1364165539000000
#
Loqi
[preview] [aaronpk] the three P's are "personal publishing platform"

Interesting thread. There are some takes in there I agree with, and some I disagree with, all with different levels of how deeply. Going to need to think about my own feelings on that a little more.

(This question could apply to IndieWeb too, what [if anything] do you opt-in to by adding mf2 to your site? Webmentions?)
#
Zegnat
Here is a thought experiment question re: search on Mastodon that I boiled my feelings down to after a long and critical chat in private. Not necessarily looking for people to answer it here, and not sure I have found my own answer yet, more an introspective that I felt worth sharing. “What did you opt-in to by chosing a platform that federates with hundreds of other uncontrollable servers?”
#
capjamesg
That question is predicated on the assumption that someone understands federation.

#
capjamesg
The first question, that is.
#
capjamesg
I don't think adding markup to a site constitutes any opt-in. If that were the case, we'd have to say that new sites on Tumblr "opt in" to the IndieWeb, which is an argument that cannot be made because most people will not think about the markup.
#
Loqi
friendly reminder capjamesg, we try to keep jargon (federation, markup) out of this channel to make it more inviting to newcomers, can you move this to #indieweb-dev?
#
capjamesg
That's fair. Will move.
#
capjamesg
-> #dev

[tantek]
Yep, no form of plumbing can be considered opt-in because it’s not (should not be) user visible

Is this the right place to ask about webmentions things?
#
Zegnat
Yes! Or if it is technical, preferably in #indieweb-dev
#
yousef
Maybe a bit borderline, but basically, does webmention.io cache mention content, or fetch from source site when needed (displaying)?
#
[tantek]
Definitely better for #indieweb-dev !
#
yousef
Ty, will take it there!

Nice presentation [capjamesg] ! Even though I have been reading about Webmentions for a few weeks now, you succinctly presented the topic in understandable language and made it even clearer! Thank you!

seeing Twitter.com/notifications kinda borked, like missing nearly everything from 2023. I'm seeing a "subscribe to Blue" ad, and then it's all 2022 notifications. 😬 anyone else?
