^ needs IndieWeb relevance in the dfn 🙂
#
[tantek]
what is a dfn
#
Loqi
The HTML dfn tag is a way to denote the first time a term is defined https://indieweb.org/dfn
#
[tantek]
what is a definition
#
Loqi
A definition on the IndieWeb wiki should be an accessible, basic, clear, plain English description of the term (or phrase) naming a wiki page, with an explicit connection to the term’s relevance to the IndieWeb, and ideally without any use of jargon https://indieweb.org/definition
#
[mattl]
what is a tag
#
Loqi
tags or tagging refers to categorizing or labeling content, your own or others (tag-reply), with words, phrases, names, or other information, optionally linked to specific people, events, locations, such as the practice of tagging posts being about certain people (person-tag), like tagging people or other items where (area-tag) they're depicted in a photo https://indieweb.org/tag
#
[mattl]
What is an html tag
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "html tag" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "html tag is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
[tantek]
What is html
#
Loqi
HTML (HyperText Markup Language) is the language used to create web pages, one of the building blocks of the IndieWeb https://indieweb.org/HTML
#
[tantek]
HTML tag is /HTML

I just performed an updated on https://whatcompublichospital.org/ . I am proud of this simple website. Has accessibility testing with Axe via Playwright, is semantic HTML, has an accessibility statement (important for the subject matter)

What does that Newsweek article have to do with #indieweb ? It's not quite spam but I think it should be removed (follow up in #indieweb-meta)
#
[tantek]
morganm re the Hospital website update, while I’m certainly a fan of such semantic HTML and accessibility updates, was there an indieweb relevance in particular like support for some building blocks or was this more a general web dev success story? If the latter, the #indieweb-dev channel would be better, however even then I hope you can connect it to some indieweb relevance

i know it may be a littlish offtopic but is it better to make temporary database in excel/libreoffice or normally mysql? wanted to make a blog post reviewing hoards of things and to sort this smh…
#
[snarfed]
how many things?
#
hacknorris
20 to 50, with tags
#
[snarfed]
oh. database seems like overkill then...? but maybe I don't know your use case well enough. do you want users to be able to sort them, within your blog post? there are JS libs that add that to HTML tables
#
[tantek]
no please take database chatter to #indieweb-dev
#
Loqi
hey [snarfed], [tantek]: we try to keep jargon (database) out of this channel to make it more inviting to newcomers, can you move this to #indieweb-dev?
#
[snarfed]
yeah true sorry
#
hacknorris
ok then, gonna move this
#
hacknorris
ok

I still plan to blog about the .io situation as I think it has broader IndieWeb implications (like for authors and publishers), e.g. a plan for fixing up any .io links since there's plenty of interesting / popular sites that have such domains

wow in doing some spellunking regarding .io I tracked down who the current owners are of the only registrar for .io, and yup, private equity firm. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethos_Capital

friendly reminder vile, aaronpk, would you mind moving this more technical conversation (frontend, JavaScript, PHP) to #indieweb-dev? thanks!

[snarfed] alright, here is my attempt at providing a calm warning to folks to make plans: https://tantek.com/2024/285/t1/io-domain-suggested-steps
#
[snarfed]
thanks!
#
[snarfed]
also looks like that Bridgy Fed theory was right. you (now, again) have followers on w3c.social, indieweb.social, and mastodon.social, and that new post is visible on @tantek.com@tantek.com on all of those instances
pixelglade joined the channel
#
[tantek]
however I believe all my prior followers on those servers are still not following me
#
[tantek]
now I'm wondering if people that notice they're no longer following me will think they got blocked or something
#
[tantek]
[snarfed] did you write a post about the accidental delete actor incident or how would/should I describe that if I were to mention it in a post and tell people no I did not block you
#
[snarfed]
I haven't posted about it yet. I should probably file an issue to at least record it!
#
[snarfed]
ugh. apologies again
#
[snarfed]
you'd describe it as, a bad bug in your fediverse provider accidentally temporarily deleted your AP actor, which resulted in most instances removing your existing followers on each of them
#
[snarfed]
feel free to revise to be less technical
#
[snarfed]
I have the list of them, I could probably send them all DMs from you to tell them what happened and ask them to re-follow you
#
[snarfed]
lmk if you want me to do that
#
[tantek]
wait, you can send DMs to people that don't follow you?!?
#
[tantek]
(on Mastodon nm any AP server?)
#
[tantek]
so anyone can slide into anyone else's DMs? 😂
#
[snarfed]
sure. same with many (most?) other social networks with DMs afaik?
#
[snarfed]
modulo users' own settings
#
[tantek]
sorta yeah, I think most social networks silo rando DMs into a separate list as "people trying to reach you" or something that are separate from you main list of dms
#
[tantek]
some social networks (Twitter, LinkedIn) by default disallow sending DMs to people that don't follow you
#
[tantek]
I like "fediverse provider" as a phrase
