realized this morning that over time, I've slowly but consistently *removed* things from my site's UI, header/footer/sidebar text, etc, not added them
#
[snarfed]
I often agonized about each one, at the time, but pretty much never regretted any of them afterward

Every few months I have to prune my navigation because I add links over time and then realise I have too many.
#
[snarfed]
yeah I don't envy you and eg [aaronpk]
#
[snarfed]
I have plenty of projects, but not that many that are features on my own site
#

I keep adding :)

One day my homepage will be 100MB of iframes :)

that's a great summary by Chris of the state of social readers built on IndieWeb building blocks 😂

Would love to see an alternative path proposed that actually provides "social" features and user choice (swappability) rather than lock-in

(If "critical mass of my friends" is your criteria, you're going to stay stuck in an all-in-one silo)
#
[social]
Reading what Chris proposes sounds a lot like what ReadMill did with ebooks and social interaction around reading among people you knew. I still deeply miss ReadMill for discover, reading experience, and social interaction within what you are reading.
#
[tantek]
I think the problem in the proposed approach is centering RSS rather than reading, perhaps a bit of RSS nostalgia
#
[social]
An ambient recommender “from people you trust” is always helpful and the good helpful systems go away far too quickly, particularly when the focus is scaling and that breaks the good curated resrouces, but also as things scales often the good people I get good suggestions from leave as the scaling breaks the system that is helpful (scaling is really hard with social).

[KevinMarks] [tantek] [social] I’m sure someone’s specced this out before, but how about this as an architecture to glue social features on top of a feed reader, rather than an all-in-one well-intentioned silo:
#
[Al_Abut]
• Something that integrates with an existing read-only feed reader, say Feedbin to start
#
[Al_Abut]
• And leaning in means not just blasting out our thoughts one way but also closing the loop with your friends’ interactions. Friends interacting on social media without clicking through get mirrored back into the reader app.
#
[Al_Abut]
• Common social features (bookmarking, highlighting, commenting, etc) get automatically posted to social media of your choice, so it doesn't try to replace or recreate your friend circle just to smooth onboarding into yet another google reader clone but leans into the fact that our friends are elsewhere.
#
[Al_Abut]
Anyone want to point me to some prior art on ideas for closing this loop? I'm tempted to mock up a flow.
#
[Al_Abut]
(ideas for prior art being visuals or descriptions in layman’s terms, I'm not going to read any specs)
#
[tantek]
[Al_Abut] prior art on social reader discussions and deep discussion of ideas like that were largely at in-person sessions at prior IndieWebCamps. I remember several at IndieWebSummits (pre-pandemic). You may have to do some digging to find the notes / recordings.
#
[tantek]
agreed, the prior art that matters is the user experience discussions
#
[Al_Abut]
[tantek] it feels like the building blocks are there. I've toyed with the idea of doing something similar with my bookmarks and highlights in my Reader app because I got frustrated by the same old thing these apps do with social media - blast out something to share

[tantek]
yeah the blast out to socials without connecting back to your personal site doesn't make a lot of sense IMO

I'm going to write up the motivation first, something along the lines of “my perfect social reader doesn't exist” or an even more flamebaity “what all the google reader clones get wrong”.

I'm inspired by this thorough examination of the state of music streaming apps:

backfeed already has a meaning, did you mean to invoke that?
#
[tantek]
what is backfeed
#
Loqi
Backfeed is the process of syndicating interactions on your POSSE copies back (AKA reverse syndicating) to your original posts https://indieweb.org/backfeed

I'm using my own biboumi instance to chat from XMPP. It's great although an official XMPP bridge would be cool because mine sometimes breaks.

jak2k jorisvandijk: we try to keep dev talk (XMPP) out of this channel, can you move to #indieweb-dev?

jak2k that sounds pretty cool, though I never heard of biboumi and only partially remember what XMPP is ;)
