CSS Grid with flexbox fallback is pretty rad
#
gRegorLove
I might make that my pre-IWS project, switch my site to CSS Grid from Skeleton

[zegnat] Zotero probably one of the msot popular, and oldest, citation browser extensions: https://jgregorymcverry.com/continuing-to-build-indieweb-citation-machine-h-cite-markup-for-apa/#comment-12080 Notice it doesn’t pick up the author in the the h-card or the publishing date in h-entry.

[Terry Elliott] Here is how the new ZoteroBib APA cites your blog post: Continuing to build #IndieWeb Citation machine: h-cite markup for APA – INTERTEXTrEVOLUTION. (n.d.). Retrieved June 9, 2018, from https://jgregorymcverry.com/continuing-to-build-indieweb-citat...

Is it OpenSource? Could be interesting to send a PR for microformats2
#
jgmac1106
Would be nice tomake sure Zotero plays well with mf2 when done
#
jgmac1106
yeah looking for repo
#
jgmac1106
atleast I think it is open source,
#
Zegnat
Obviously working on bigger and existing projects is preferable to reinventing the wheel. Especially in education, I expect
#
jgmac1106
Maybe not open source, always thought it was, but run by non-profit consortium: https://www.zotero.org/
#
jgmac1106
Springer, a hated publisher, bought Mendeley about five years ago, most folks before that were on Zotero , many returned
#
jgmac1106
GNU license
#
Zegnat
GPL? So maybe we should look into making Zotero support mf2 then.
#
Zegnat
How is their BibTeX to HTML? As that is the current experimental code we are working on
#
jgmac1106
not good, and I think is still better to have our small building block version. That way folks want to make a WordPress plugin or a Drupal module they could. Be nice for example if doing a quote post type you could check a box to add a citation.
#
jgmac1106
I just found it interesting that Zotero didn’t recognize mf2, was hoping there would have been some discussion around it
#
Zegnat
Probably not enough scientific articles being marked up with mf2 for people to have had a need for it?
#
Zegnat
Always a chicken-and-egg problem. Do you start adding the markup only when consuming tools exist, or do you write consuming tools only when markup is prevelent already.
#
Zegnat
Best case: you use the markup yourself, and also create a consuming tool for it
#
jgmac1106
probably none, he used the cite website function my guess

Anyone got a minute to talk about IRC and ZNC on iOS?
#
Zegnat
Afraid I am not an iOS user
#
jeremycherfas
Ah but, you know about IRC and ZNC.
#
jeremycherfas
Here's my question. I'm fed up with using Slack on my phone, so I thought I would get an IRC client. So far so good. I have one called Muter. And I can connect to freenode and #indieweb etc
#
jeremycherfas
But, do I need to connect to something like PanicBNC in order to get scrollback etc?
jeremycherfas_ joined the channel
#
Zegnat
Ah. Yes.
#
jgmac1106
how does https://chat.indieweb.org look on Safari?
#
Zegnat
jeremycherfas, you will want to run something that emulates an IRC client on a server, that stays permanently connected in your name and collects backscroll. ZNC is pretty nice because it is basically an IRC server itself, so you can use any IRC client to connect to it. Some other solutions like Weechat and Quassel need specialised clients to connect.
#
jeremycherfas
Right. So then when I have the details from my bouncer request, I connect to that instead of to freenode?
#
Zegnat
jgmac1106, uuh, it looks like it does in other browsers?
#
jeremycherfas
Thanks. And presumably I can do the same from my desktop IRC client too?
#
jgmac1106
never tried on mobile, figured it would, but that is how I scroll back, and search features awesome
#
Zegnat
jeremycherfas, yep. In fact, you’ll probably want to always use the bouncer from any and all IRC clients you use. That way stuff stays in sync
#
jeremycherfas
I thought you used Slack most of the time.
#
jeremycherfas
That's what I was thinking. Thanks zegnat.
#
jgmac1106
on mobile, when on hotspot bc Verizon blocks so many ports
#
jeremycherfas
Ahy. Right.
#
jgmac1106
or just when in slack for something else everythign is open
#
jgmac1106
[zegnat] ultimate goal is to include the citation engine into what ever UI will edventually spit out something like this (ignore incorrect h-entry): https://syllabus.glitch.me/

hm, reading [cjwillcock] s log and remembering other recent conversations, seems like indiewebify.me is kind of leading people astray with asking for an author h-card where often a simple url to the homepage would work better
#
aaronpk
hm yeah. We really need to do some updates to that tool
#
aaronpk
Or at least add a note that there is more than one solution and tell people where else to look for info

[cjwillcock]
@sknebel [aaronpk] the indiewebify.me tool was recommended to me early on so I just got to work there. I'll take suggestions/recommendations here for alternatives gladly
#
sknebel
regarding your author issue, it'd actually be best in your case to not put an h-card for the author, but just an <a href="https://wp-dev.cjwillcock.ca/" class="u-author">
#
sknebel
then sites doing our authorship discovery would use either the h-card from your homepage or the one on the sidebar
#
sknebel
what is authorship?
#
Loqi
authorship is how to determine who the author(s) of a post are https://indieweb.org/authorship
#
gRegorLove
Unfortunately indiewebify.me is not currently as robust as the /authorship algorithm
#
sknebel
yeah, that's why mentioned above that it's probably misleading people

#
[cjwillcock]
I have fallen into a trap, where my expectations didn't match up with what the tool can do for me. I tried the test-driven-(learning,development) approach - where the indiewebify.me is my test authority and i red/green refactor to learn how the parts fit together. Looking for an accelerated approach to understanding various facets of IndieWeb (indiemark levels)
#
[cjwillcock]
i think, that's not for the best
#
sknebel
I guess our approach to these things might very well have changed since that part of indiewebify.me was built. and having a small author-h-card isn't *wrong*, it works, but might not be optimal. and in this case apparently collided with the small h-card the mf2-plugin wants to generate
#
[cjwillcock]
but props to everyone involved with that tool, if I was so picky about the results, I would have gotten through it much more quickly
#
[cjwillcock]
*wasn't
#
sknebel
true, it still got you to a useable point.
