[Al_Abut]At this point I really need to *not* work on my site. I’ve been on such a manic rush of energy that I’ve accidentally pulled three all-nighters in the last five days and I’m wrecked now that the adrenaline wore off.
carrvoI don't know the whole history as to why JavaScript is "so bad" to work with, but if it truly is then how come we have Node.js so that we can write even more of it? And why is it so popular?
[tantek]a little bit of frameworkitis, a little managers/CEOs asking for cheesy effects more than content, and perhaps some cargo-culting as well. plus demands for more analytics, and more ad-based revenue
[Al_Abut]Some of the popularity around javascript also has to be consolidation around a “good enough” language after learning fatigue from all the different specialized languages. So many app stacks are a Tower of Babel and it speeds things up to stick to just one language across different frameworks and levels of the stack
[Al_Abut]That’s usually the split I see when we talk about the web - apps vs content, specifically writing and photo content more than video. It has more explanatory power for me than big or small, corporate vs indie, etc.
[Al_Abut]But that’s orthogonal to my points that it’s 1) not a bad language in isolation, it just makes different tradeoffs, and 2) it’s easier in some ways to use one language across a stack, rather than js for frontend, something else for backend, another one for connecting to data services, on and on
[morganm]I'm inclined to consider the concept of Worse is Better to understand why it's remained so enduring. You can pick up a little bit of it really fast, do some stuff, then people just kept building on it. Then you get whole attempts at making the whole stack solutions in it and it's kind of not optimal in many big picture ways
[morganm]I remember when I was learning PHP in the context of my first job, and then I watched a talk by the creator about how if you are making whole frameworks out of it you have gone too far
