wow just noticed the clever minimal h-event markup on /events, e.g. <a class="external h-event" href="/events/2018-11-14-homebrew-website-club-sf">🌁 San Francisco<data class="dt-start" value="2018-11-14"></data></a>
#
[tantek]
this looks great except the "external" class name seems wrong
#
[tantek]
I think I can fix this
#
[tantek]
tries something
#
tantek.com
edited /Events (+2) "/* November */ try using a wiki link for a mini h-event"

#
sknebel
we already changed the CSS that the external doesn't cause any style changes
#
[tantek]
looks like that worked. extra span for the whole h-event but I think that's ok
#
[tantek]
This works: <span class="h-event">[[events/2018-11-14-homebrew-website-club-sf|🌁 San Francisco]]<data class="dt-start" value="2018-11-14"></data></span>
#
[tantek]
I'd prefer to avoid the extra class in the first place. Having to be wary of that in the CSS feels like a potential extra maintenance task
#
[tantek]
(e.g. future theme updates etc.)
#
sknebel
which reminds me...
#
[tantek]
sknebel - does that markup change affect Kaja?
#
[tantek]
I noticed <!--Kaja_magic_string--> 😂
#
sknebel
shouldn't
#
[tantek]
great, I'll fix the other cities too then
#
sknebel
the newsletter also uses mf2 parsing and will accept it too
#
sknebel
the magic_string doesn't do anything yet, I'm still figuring out how to edit that page best without breaking things
#
[tantek]
ok cool
#
sknebel
was pretty neat the the newsletter basically just works with the new style
#
[tantek]
Austin and Baltimore HWCs this week and last week listed in /events should be using the one-day-event template

don't think so - I think aaronpk made those quickly. can you add that to the todo list?

looks like the CSS in https://indieweb.org/wiki/index.php?oldid=53835&rcid=53704 is insufficient to remove the "external link" indicator from the .external links generated by the one-day-event template
#
[tantek]
because the mediawiki theme's style rule uses an ID (SMH) it overrides the fix-up in that CSS
#
[tantek]
div#content a[href^="https://"] beats .mw-body-content a.external[href^="https://indieweb.org"]

Quick note to #indieweb that Twitter is explicitly disconnecting Bridgy access. Don’t know if this is temporary or not but syndication and retrieving responses will be wonky for now if you’re using it.

No Bridgy Twitter issues for me lately.

gRegorLove: [tantek] left you a message 15 hours, 47 minutes ago: none of the new HWC event pages have a Photos section - seems like that critical section was accidentally dropped? Going to add in both old/new places and make sure both are in /events until this is for sure fixed.

gRegorLove: [tantek] left you a message 2 hours, 9 minutes ago: WDYT of wrapping the {{{event_description}}} in the one-day-event template inside a <nowiki> to block additional links from being inserted there? (would need to do this to make local wiki links work for {{{event_wiki_page}}}) asking because I saw your mf2 talk entry put an explicit <span class="u-url"> in the description.
#
gRegorLove
Not sure I follow. I wanted it to autolink that URL.
#
[eddie]
Yeah it's working fine for me

Gregorlove the trade off is that if the only link is generated by the template, I can make wiki links native wiki links that use the implied url rule
#
[tantek]
And thus don’t have class name external

Sorry, I'm still not following. Maybe it will be clearer when I see it in action. I'd say go ahead and experiment.

argh, how's that not winning
#
[tantek]
sknebel, you only changed the first selector amongst the "x,y" set
#
sknebel
thx, of course
#
sknebel
ok, yeah, need to add 2 ids to force it above the other rule
#
[tantek]
no you can match the # of IDs, then have more classes
#
[tantek]
in fact please minimize use of IDs in your selectors
#
[tantek]
ideally use *only* the same ID you hare being forced to override

what's the problem with additonal links?
#
[tantek]
only one link works for implied u-url
#

edited /Template:one-day-event (-17) "allowing event description to override the primary link for an event"
(view diff)
#
sknebel
yeah, not sure that's the right choice then
#
sknebel
in the template, the styling could also be overridden locally if you want to be sure
#
sknebel
or with a special class with !important, to not have to inspect the URL in template logic
#
sknebel
although I think my approach is fine, and covers all kinds of uses
#
[tantek]
hmm too many elements to use implied u-url
#
[tantek]
I think I need this extension, which has a nice syntax too IMO: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension%3aLinkAttributes
#
sknebel
aaronpk: can you update the css from https://indieweb.org/User:Www.svenknebel.de/vector.css again?
#
[tantek]
sknebel - I dislike the use of two IDs in those rules
#
[tantek]
should only have to use the one ID

#
sknebel
there is only one id
#

apologies I misread the diff, re-reviewing latest version
#

I tweaked it after your feedback to only use the one ID the other rule I want to override uses too
#
[tantek]
hmm looks like that extension needs a patch to allow the class attribute

↩️ I like that idea. Perhaps between the models for IndieWeb news and @kickscondor's http://indiweb.xyz, we could create a syndicatable (pre-print) academic journal that allows sorting by top level academic disciplines. I don't recall though, [more...] https://boffosocko.com/2018/11/15/reply-to-greg-mcverry-about-academic-samizdat-pre-print-server/

Totally agree, but how? Seems most use blogs as fodder for social these days, if at all. What will it take to reclaim content onto to our own blogs in this era of addictive social media @JasonMillerCA? #MPB2B #indieweb

[sdepolo] we need to get you set up with Aperture and an indieweb social reader - you may be able to use that as something to check instead of social media

Yes plz [tantek]
#
[tantek]
[sdepolo] if you try going to aperture.p3k.io and signing up with your domain, does it work?
#
[sdepolo]
I’ll check and let you know.
#
[sdepolo]
I also heard last night that microdotblogs might be something for me to look into as a stepping stone from Twitter
#
[tantek]
yes - it may be an easier path than WordPress
#
aaronpk
definitely micro.blog is a more polished experience
#
aaronpk
if you have wordpress there's an aperture plugin that will make setting things up easier. install aperture and indieauth plugins and things "should" just work
#
aaronpk
but still micro.blog is even easier than that :)
#
[tantek]
except for the yak shaving of export/import and preserving old permalinks
#
aaronpk
migrating anything is never straightforward
#
[tantek]
hence not "easier"
#
aaronpk
migrating to wordpress isn't easy either, same problem
#
[tantek]
no she's on wordpress right now. zero migration.
#
aaronpk
oh that wasn't part of this claim
#
[tantek]
yes her existing setup was always part of the context
#
aaronpk
that was not clear from this conversation
#
[tantek]
then I misread your expression "if you have wordpress ... but still micro.blog is even easier than that "
#
aaronpk
okay youre right, i left out that factor in the consideration. i was just talking about the experience of setting up an experience similar to twitter social media
[manton] joined the channel
#
[manton]
Micro.blog does automatically redirect old permalinks from WordPress imports, by the way. But yeah, migration always has to be done carefully. Easy for things to not get fully migrated, e.g. images.

#
[tantek]

#
[tantek]
[sdepolo] how many posts do you have in WordPress currently, and would you consider switching to using the paid micro.blog service instead of maintaining your own WordPress?
#
[tantek]
you would keep your own domain name, permalinks, etc., and your old permalinks would still work
#
[tantek]
aside: [manton] while you're here - ok with 🌮 for Austin? E.g. in IWC / HWC lists - like the current sidebar and events listings here: https://indieweb.org/Events

#
[tantek]
GWG, the use-case has changed, so I'm trying my best to accurately explain options to [sdepolo] for moving forward.
#
[tantek]
What would be neat if is export/import both directions, i.e. a roundtrip, was lossless
#
[tantek]
WordPress -> micro.blog -> WordPress
#
[tantek]
GWG, do you have or know of documentation for importing from micro.blog into WordPress?
#
GWG
Oh. I wasn't really serious anyway

GWG
Not really
