↩️ for me, p2p is harder to take to task in the same way as I did for federation and indieweb because p2p doesn't really have the same explicitly political goals like federation and indieweb but the problems that I have with p2p stuff, and the community, are still there, so

#
@defnotbeka
ok I promised @kevinmarks and @NoraDotCodes a thread where I take p2p to task instead of indieweb and federation this time, so here goes!

↩️ not all, to be sure! but so much of it. i dunno. i feel like when you hate people who arent as smart as you, you're bound to produce insular communities with bad software. its the same problem with indieweb tbh

hard disagree that^ describes indieweb

yeah that is a pretty bad take

pretty sure they found out about indieweb a few days ago and their opinion is based on a cursory skim of the wiki
#
@kevinmarks
↩️ That is very unfair to indieweb, as we work to lots of people. What you may be seeing there is left over from the initial indieweb founding due to frustration with architecture astronautics giving us layers and layers of abstraction with no implementations.
(twitter.com/_/status/1576302654896029696)
#
[schmarty]
it reinforces my theory that they assume the IndieWeb community considers itself to be "done"
#
[schmarty]
a project / product rather than a community of experimenters trying to figure stuff out.

Yeah, looking at the homepage wonder if we can use more language like "gives you more control" vs concrete-sounding "By joining the IndieWeb, your content stays yours and in your control."
#
gRegor
Because obviously it's still possible to lose your content in indieweb-land if your host goes poof and you don't have backups. But it's degrees of more control.
#
[tantek]4
it's a difficult balance gRegor. unfortunately as far as "open" "indie" "decentralized" "federated" movements/communities go, the home page is a place where have to project a highly inspiring if aspirational future, or else we lose folks to others who are willing to say anything to promote their projects
#
[tantek]4
it's not about "it's still possible to..." it's the difference between how people treat their content today, and how they could treat their content with any number of IndieWeb solutions
#
[tantek]4
it's still possible for lightning to strike your host too
#
gRegor
I guess I'm trying to think of ways to convey "this is a spectrum, and we're working towards these goals"
#
[tantek]4
that's what the linked pages should explain. that's too much subtlety for the home page which already has a lot of content
#
[tantek]4
also, having a bold aspirational statement on the home page is a good reminder to all of us to not get complacent or "settle" for "good enough" solutions that work today.
#
[tantek]4
rather to keep pushing to reach those aspirational goals
#

gRegor: re: hosting, that's about to be me in a few days lol
#
gRegor
uh oh!
#
@defnotbeka
like, ok, first and foremost, if we look at file sharing apps, they're almost identical to what they were like 15 years ago. seriously. i was using transmission in 2007 and it looks EXACTLY the same and has EXACTLY the same features which is fine, i guess, but
(twitter.com/_/status/1576281078922301440)
#
[tantek]4
they had a similar complaint about indieweb being the same thing from 2007
#
@defnotbeka
i mean really? in 15 years there's been nothing new that people could envision for bittorrent? REALLY?
(twitter.com/_/status/1576281267791806464)
#
jacky
yeah, not in the most cozy of places but I'll have a lot backed up

(now obviously the IndieWeb building blocks are quite a lot more than "nothing new", however it does feel like and in many ways it's true that in terms of user-features, if you squint, everything today looks like friendlier / more interoperable versions of stuff from ~2007)

[tantek]4
It struck me as an interesting "coincidence" across two very different yet values compatible communities, what happened in 2007?
#
[tantek]4
short answer: Twitter "blew up" (gained massive adoption) in those communities in particular in 2007. so I can't help but wonder, did the collective adoption of Twitter actually slow us all down with a combination of distraction & reduced attention spans? (harder to actually focus long enough to create those big innovations and leaps forward)
#
[tantek]4
lots of related things "peaked" in 2007. Technorati peaked in 2007 (disclosure, perhaps related, myself, [KevinMarks] and several other key creative/innovative folks left that year as well)

#
@defnotbeka
it feels like every "new" p2p system is just a tiny variation on 15 year old designs, rather than trying to address bigger and more interesting challenges

It looks like we don't have a page for "tongue-twister" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "tongue-twister is ____", a sentence describing the term)

We probably don't need a page for worcestershire
