Does IW chat have blocking by keyword? Generally I find that kind of heavy-handed, but in the case of repeated Spam, whether well intentions but oblivious or actually badly intentions, in this case there’s a specific domain that I don’t think any of us are losing anything by blocking it from being mentioned in chat at all.
#
aaronpk
not really possible due to all the bridges and running on 3 unrelated platforms
#
[Mike]
I figured. Worth asking, though.

aaronpk: i dont think i know any on-demand enamel pin vendors, but i'll let you know if i find one.
#
[Mike]
We should rent a kiln and have an indieweb in-person meetup and make our own enamel pins, like at summer camp
#
WinnerWind
[Mike]: i dont know how time consuming making enamel pins making are
#
WinnerWind
aaronpk: someone i know knows of an on-demand vendor with international shipping, i'll get the deets and email them to you? who handles the merch store?
#
WinnerWind
he says circular shaped pins can be readied in 2-3 days
#
WinnerWind
but he says that we should probably have a design in mind before we contact them
#
WinnerWind
additional details: custom shapes are okay, but enamel pins require a MOQ if we go down that route (minimum 20-50 units) but lapel pins in a small quantity can be done on demand
#
WinnerWind
lapel pins = pins with a metal base pin with a vinyl on top
#
WinnerWind
enamel pins have texture but because of that they'd prefer that we do a MOQ, i dont know the volume at which merch is bought from the IWC merch store so im not sure if minimum 20-50 units would be worth it
#
aaronpk
i'm less worried about a minimum batch size, more worried about fulfillment. so if we had to pre-buy 50 but he could take orders and ship them out, that would probably be doable

[tantek] [artlung] + everyone else. Osteophage noted to me one instance relating to removing links where they weren’t sure how to handle a scenario where someone’s post more generally on the web had been sufficiently poorly received that they had deleted their site. The only context I can find is on https://mastodon.social/@st3phvee/1164447814. A web search for their domain showed at least one hostile blog post written in response to
#
[capjamesg]
what they had written.
#
[capjamesg]
I don’t know enough to comment on the specifics of what happened, but there is a discussion to be had on what we do about links where something like this has happened.
#
[tantek]
I think the default is to repair dead links to Internet Archive copies
#
[tantek]
unless there is a specific reason for that specific instance not to (e.g. deadnaming)
#
[tantek]
Huh that st3phvee post may be gone for unrelated reasons, i.e. it says on their profile "Unless they're linked to my blog, my posts auto-delete after a week to foil the AI data vampires that are sucking the internet dry."
#
[capjamesg]
Oops, I think Slack broke the link or maybe I did: https://mastodon.social/@st3phvee/116444781492817412

#
[tantek]
indeed. to be blunt, this is why HN is shit if you'll pardon the French
#
[tantek]
like other social media sites, I would assume any random bad posts on HN are at this point indistiguishable from bots/LLMs
#
[tantek]
indistinguishable*

I have certain referrers whose users I don’t want visiting my site, so I actually have a cloudflare worker that tracks visitors arriving with those referrers, and then adds them to a secondary list that blacklists those visitors for a length of time afterwards even if they type in the URL directly. It’s not 100% bullet proof of course but it does a good job of dissuading visitors from those sites from continuing to try.

That's a good idea [Mike]. I wonder how hard it would be to block or show alternative content to folks coming from Reddit / HN
#
[tantek]
would love to see a alternative content by referrer proof of concept
